After buying the Clarke roatary tool thinking it would be ok to do the few jobs it was needed for, it promptly broke, was replaced, then broke again....

So.... has anyone got a decent quality one they would recommend or do I just need to fork out on a Dremel?

Featured Replies

Ive got a black and decker one used it for a few jobs without issue so far but then again its not done anything really heavy or prolonged.

If you can afford one then dremel are the way

I had a dremel and I found it to be shit tbh. I bought the box set one from maplin with the digital speed control. It's very powerful and I used it to port my heads. The only thing is the collers which are brass do wear quite quick so a decent set of steel ones would make it spot on. The accessories are plentiful too.

Don't buy a cordless one at least....unless you buy spare batteries, they'll always go empty in the middle of a job it seems.

I have a battery powered dremel now but only after using it one time I missed my old corded one.

I got a dremel to do an injector change!

Worth the money.

Marlins are a good source for box kits.

Had a corded dremel for quite a few years and give it a hard time but still works today...cordless are usually gutless imo :)

Buy a dremel, had mine for years now and it has never let me down.

I even cut the rear sections of the outer sills off with it on my first zed, got through some discs but the dremel itself worked faultlessly.

  • 1 month later...

I had a dremel for a long time and had my moneys worth but did buy the exact same for spares or repairs so i did have extra batteries, chargers, etc.

It eventually all died and i bought a GMC one from ebay, what a pile of pants this was and only lasted 4 months, i shall be seeking a full refund from the manufacturer.

I cannot be without a rotary tool and after research and being totally fed up with rechargeable ones i stumbled across one from Maplins, many of the corded ones i notice are 130w but this one is 170w and is fitted with a dinky LCD speed display/control.

Not a Maplins in my town so had to travel to Blackburn today, free delivery is offered, best thing of all..............half price, only £25, especially when they offer only a 130w one for £35.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/170w-variable-speed-rotary-tool-with-lcd-and-219-piece-accessory-set-n17qn

EDIT : Came to use this today and it's missing like mad, i squeeze the brushes in and it picks up, then it'll just die and as a lack of power.

Not good at all, it's going back to the store and i'll try an exchange trying it out in the shop before i come away !!!

EDIT PART 2 : Went back to the store and got them to try it and we all concluded that it was a 'bad one', it was clearly something up with the brushes, they informed me that they haven't any problems with them. Gave me a replacement which is what i wanted, tried it in store and up to now it's fine, with the flexi drive on it is incredibly powerful and no need to go any higher than 20,000rpm.....goes up to 35,000rpm by the way.

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

  • 2 years later...

I am very happy with my Maplin rotary tool and is still going strong.

This is more of a heads up because Maplin Electronics Ltd is closing down, i wandered into a store yesterday with plenty of reductions, so if there's one near you pay them a visit.

If you click the link in my post above, you'll notice the tool i champion is £34.99, cannot remember what i paid though but for a 170w machine - it isn't bad....up to you though.

EDIT : It does look like i only paid £25 having read the above more thoroughly, what a bargain that is, full price when fully trading was £50, so todays £34.99 not too bad with a LCD display......may go cheaper but may go out of stock any day !!
