Insurance

Renewal is less than a month away and although I've a few left to try the best quote I've got yet is just under €3,400. Anyone have a useful contact in the insurance industry? Car is too new for a classic policy.

I think there could be a problem with trade policies, as it used to be they took nobody under 25 years old, either as a policy holder or named driver. Every year my policy is up for renewal I ring around just for the craic, mostly I get refused, in that we dont insure performance cars or the quote is just off the wall. At the moment I go through a broker, OHC Insurances, Main St. Dundrum, David or Jackie, Axa is the Company, Fully Comp. for 540.

Liberty told me they wouldn't quote anyone on a car of that power. It's funny when they straight out lie to you.

No luck with Kilbridge either Richie, said they couldn't quote for it.

That's so bad, it's almost funny!

I'm assuming they're basing their decision on facts such as "older" cars having nowhere near as much safety equipment or electronic aids as "modern" cars do... but what about all the "modern" cars that are driven the wrong way on motorways by people in their 70s?!

Will insurance companies start refusing cover to that age bracket because, statistically, they're potential menaces...? Or will they simply continue to target older cars and their (on average) less than affluent owners...?

Honestly, the world today... I despair sometimes....

Did you try Campion Jay?? you might have to see if your dad can get cover and name you as a driver??

It's also been mentioned in relation to this that vehicle condition is a factor in 0.2% of claims. I think this is really their way of excluding groups they find undesirable.

Campion will cover me privately but without driving of other cars, so not very practical with a Z. Have yet to look into trade policy or named driver but it's up there!

Another example of what the Irish people have to suffer!! The Government has no problem charging €1800 in road tax, €55 for NCT (MOT), but the Insurance companies then want to pick and choose what they'll cover!! and when they do they want to charge me €850 for the Z!

THIS COUNTRY IS A TOTAL RIP OFF!!!

Trish, AXA quoted me €850, I'm 42 with a full no claims bonus and have an Outlander, L200, and GSXR1000 insured with them!! I think I'm going to pull my business with them in October and look into going back to a Trade Policy.

It's a disgrace in the first place that they can create legal requirements for things like insurance and car testing and then let private companies monopolise the market.

Can you not explain to Campion that this is a weekend car and look for a limited mileage quote (3000-5000miles) per annum or get a cheap van, get commercial insurance on the van as a daily driver and a private limited mileage policy on the Z?? Worth a thought mate:thumbup1:

Haven't heard of any limited mileage policies available other than classics? Other than that I wouldn't say it's a weekend car although I only do about 6,000 miles a year anyway. Problem with the van would be having nowhere to put it!

Trade policy is still worth a try but I'm not sure it would be any cheaper for me tbh.

Yep I tried them since you mentioned before. No luck I'm afraid, but thanks

and now Allianz and Aviva have put a blanket ban on insuring ANY car over 15 years old, watch how many more follow

Got an email with further details from them this morning.

Based on the details provided we have been unable to obtain a quotation with any of our insurers. This is due to the vehicle being imported, as it does not match up to any of the vehicles available for quotation on our system.

Most of the systems used by insurers here only seem to pick up models up to '96 or '98.

Somewhat positive news this morning - confirmed comprehensive quote, quite generous with benefits if I'm honest, for €3,382. This is the only underwriter that would even quote me so it's good to have it confirmed that the car being an import isn't a problem. Only downside is I don't think they'll give me a driving other cars benefit due to age (I have it now, and with a Z it's hardly increasing risk!). It would be a shame to think of all that money that would be better spent on maintaining the car though, that's the only thing that really bothers me :(

Can't see a trade policy being significantly cheaper but I'll still look into it before I make any decisions. Named driver is also unlikely as when I asked AXA for myself, they told me to come back when I'm 30!

Don't know what to say to you Jay, I'm all out of ideas:sad:

I'll sort something cheers for the help.

Things are just getting annoying now. I have options - expensive but they'll do if it comes to it. The bigger problem is no other underwriter will allow me to drive other cars due to my age! I have this benefit at the moment, driving a shed, yet I can't get it with a Z.

Missus just got a small car, so we'd manage with me as a named driver on it and insured on my Z. She has a provisional license and has never held insurance. I have a full license and NCB for three years. Most of them want an extra €2,000 or so to stick me on her policy!

Why don't you see if the girlfriend can get cheaper insurance on the Z, I know that's meant to be finished with but insurance companies still see women as safer drivers.

Well the sexism clearly hasn't stopped if they want an extra €2,000 to name me on her policy! I don't think there's much hope of her getting on the Z with a provisional license and no experience though.

You never know mate, stranger things have happened!
