Was down at Jeffs last week and tentatively asked about a chip upgrade.

"no probs" says Jeff, "instant 70BHP increase in power".

After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I wondered if there are any deleterious effects from the engine suddeny having almost a quarter as much power again as it had before. I have a large bore exhaust (catted) and am about to fit a blitz induction kit.

This is most probably fairly standard stuff for a lot of you but it will be the first time I`ve had a mod like this on a car.......worth it? good for the car or bad?

If done right then it will be fine, not so much the chip that can kill your Z,well if it runs lean it will, the real danger can be the boost jets that are fitted, over 1 bar on stock pistons and it could go BANG:(

Fit an aftermarket boost gauge first before you do it IMHO.

Dont forget these cars would have been designed for that type of power and then restricted for Japanese law.

You can get 70-80BHP just by changing the fuel rate slightly and makeing the turbo work at 85% of its designed boost instead of the stock 60% of the turbos ablilty. The turbo would have been turned down to get meet the power law and the fuel turned down to meet emissions laws.

However the clutch may not last too long though if its a stock one.

Another alternative is the SE Nissan turbo 'Boost upgrade'....at £275 for a 50 bhp power hike it does seem stunning value for money.

Anyone out there had this done?

I had it done and was completely happy with it. Ran it for a year without a problem before going for a 'proper' chip upgrade.

There are mixed opinions on it however - a search will reveal them.

Dave

Cheers James, nice one - tells me everything I need to know.

Yes, I've had it done, works ok, but to be honest all they do is run a bleed hose for the £275! takes them about 10 mins, forget all that crap about then spending hours inspecting the turbo's etc. Check my own post asking the same question, some very good info there...

http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14586

There is more to it than just running a bleed hose. If they did just that then you would get immediate detonation and a very quick blow up. I am not saying that there aren't others way to skin a cat but it is not fair to say that they just run a hose.

is it expensive for the labour involved ? Yes - but you pay for experience and for them taking an element of responsibility for any subsequent problems. And that experience IS worth something.

See the other thread to allow you to make your own decision on whether it's worth £275 to you.

LMAO where do you come up with this stuff bwhahahahahaha.

Its a simple bleed valve they install.

End of story, its not worht 250 pounds.

for 250 pounds you can get a decent boost controller and do it properly.

Bottom line is, dont play with boost the cheap way.

Don't they retard the timing as well to avoid detonation (and subsequently lose power throughout the rev range)?

You have chosen the wrong person to defend SE to!!!

I have had nothing but BAD experiences with them. One after another after another. Their "boost upgrade" did work and gave me extra power but, it is simply a bleed valve nothing more and if I had been a bit more informed at the time, would have never of gone that way. They supplied and fitted an engine for me, after about 3 years it was ready to pick up. So I get there and double check all the work I have asked for has been done. "Done the boost upgrade?"

"Oh, we forgot about that, hang on"

-ten minutes later my boost upgrade was complete. Say no more. On further visits for work to be done, I was left disappointed and angry with their work. Maybe I was unlucky, who knows? this is only my dealings with them and it seems other people are happy with the work they've done for them. I can only go by MY experience! and that was AWFUL.

I have very clearly said that I suggest people make their own mind up. That is not defending.

I was simply correcting your facts - their boost upgrade involves more than fitting a bleed jet. Perhaps yours was done differently. If so, then yours is different to their statement, the way mine was done, and the way others have been done which I've seen.

Dave

I would love to know what else they do! tell me, please, and I'm not being sarcastic. I was present.... in the reception area, they seemed keen to keep me there aswell.

Suggesting people make up their own minds is just that, a suggestion. Saying you pay for their experience and for them taking an element of responsibilty for any subsequent problems, in MY opinion is defending them, or their price, which is the same thing. SE are just a sensitive issue for me, thats all. My mind is poisoned against them.

No matter how experienced ANYONE is, £275 for 10 mins work in MY opinion is a rip-off.

Take it easy Dave, the paragliding looks like a good crack!

OK, from my own case, they inspected they gave the turbos a visual inspection including taking a few bits & pieces away to get a decent look. They checked boost pressure before altering anything. They then fitted the bleed lines with jets in each side plus an outlet with a 'fine adjustment' jet in there. They then retarded the ignition. They then road tested with a decent boost gauge connected to check boost levels and detonation. They returned and changed the jet and repeated the exercise (don't know what was not right). Pete R then spent half an hour with me talking through what it was about, how to spot detonation, weather conditions to watch out for, what a boost spike was and what to look for. He explained the limitations of upgrading boost like that.

The reason I say people should make their own opinion is that others (yourself and Warren included) have had very different experiences. That does not invalidate my experience. You ARE paying someone like that for experience. You may decide the experience is not worth that much money but it IS what you are paying for. Pete R will not tell anyone that he is fitting £275 of gadgets to your car.

I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else. I'm simply, once again, creating a balanced thread instead of a purely negative one. Forum members, particularly new ones, don't get anything out of one sided views.

If you were charged £275 for 10 mins work then you didn't get what I've experienced, what I've seen others get for their boost upgrade, or what SE's brochure says you'll get - in that case you have every right to be aggrieved. I would be too !

Dave

P.S. Paragliding is awesome - everyone should do it. Beats any bhp induced adrenaline rush !

P.P.S. Here endeth my contribution to SE discussions for 2002 !

Cool.

I'm working my way up to my first un-assisted 10,000 ft freefall at Headcorn. I'll have to take my camera-but will be too busy sh1tting it to take a photo!!!

James.

I could never do freefall !

With paragliding you inflate before you launch so you know the things above you before your feet leave the floor.

I must like my adrenaline in slightly more controlled doses than you !

Oh and I'm hoping to get my tandem licence in the next 12 months or so - I'll be on the lookout for victims ...

just done my own ;) its great!! :D cost me very little too.

chip, jets & decent gauge = big grin imo/ime/imho etc......:D

Been jet-skiing for the past 3 years at Port Talbot aswell, now that is a laugh! is that far from you? I

must admit, when you jump you're just waiting for that resistance of the parachute so you know you're not gonna die!!!

Its all good fun,

James.

LMAO in order

A: SUICIDE ENGINEERING (funny how the problems started after they touched the car) (big lesson learnt here)

this company is bar none the worst place i have ever dealt with regarding customer service EVER.

B: well no one else really? dont understand where you get this impression that my car has been ****ed up ect?

If you want a list of who to avoide, because they know ****all ill gladly provide it lol.

And regarding Progress, they took along time on my car and they did damage some bodywork, but they are fully prepared to take responsibility (we have come to an arrangment) and the work i asked them to do on my engine is exactly what i wanted, and they have sorted it out perfectly.

WHY?

All i can say Bean Laadin will give himself up before i change my mind about SE.

Any company that deliberately rips clients of like they did me (unless of course they really just did not have a ****ing clue what they were doing) desearve all the publicity they get, and lets face it-its never really good is it.

(and just for the record since this has gone way of topic, its not actually about me and my dealings with other companies, its about SE again) so ill end this here.

Port Talbot isn't too far away - I'm just north of Cardiff.

I tried jet-skiing in Florida and thought it was brilliant. I was amazed at how physical it was. I hired the thing for an hour and by the end I had big blisters on my hands and I was absolutely shattered.
