I have just replaced my front discs cos they were shot away....and they were causing a "pulsing" through the pedal. I have allowed time for the discs and pads to unite....but occasionally they still "judder". Would this be the front torsion bar type thingies?....as in the bushes need replacing?

 

Anyone any ideas?

Had a similar problem with mine, I changed the discs but it still juddered. Turned out to be a warped passenger side front CALIPER! Brakes on these things are pretty marginal, so I guess one of the previous owners cooked it:eek:

 

I got a set of replacement calipers from "written off my Z" and all is well (or you might like to go for one of the upgrades)

The early Z brakes where Aluminium but where changed to cast iron in 92 or 93 I think it was. Must have been due to the Aluminium ones warping under heat.

 

 

You also get juggering when braking from high speeds when the torsion bushes are worn.

At what speed does the juddering occur?

Mine juddered at quite high speed, 70 or so and it was the tension rod bush, Jeff pressed in some poly one's and hey presto, juddering gone!

If yours judders at slower speeds I reckon you can rule this out as a cause.

The juddering occurs when braking from higher speeds. To give you all an example...a car pulled out from the inside lane on me when I was up to the ton in the outside lane...had to brake pretty rapidly to avoid running into his arse....juddered like mad then.

 

 

Slow speeds its fine absoulutley no probs...in fact the discs have made it brake like a new car!...So I have no complaints about the discs. I replaced all the pads with new as well (Blue Print ones)...all new squeel shims to. Perhaps its like you said X Biker, maybe someting to do with the calipers...or these bushes at the front of the torsion bars.

 

 

Just as an afterthought, when I was replacing the pads I had to put a lot of force onto one of the pistons to get it to close up.... Its was pretty well stuck...so I popped out all the pistons in that caliper...polished them with autosol....put a small amount of copaslip on them and put them back in...they all worked fine after that...unless of course its stuck again. But the judder feels more like a movement related sensation rather than a binding of the brakes or warped disc.

Are there bushes at both ends of the tension rod and how much were the poly ones? I've got the same problem when braking.

I had this problem and sorted it last week. I Replaced the torsion bar bushes solved the problem. there is one big bush in the end of each torsion bar.

 

mine cost £58 + delivery and they came within 2 days.

 

Its easy job to take the torsion bars out of the car, but I highly recomend you take them somewhere that has a big hydralic press to push the old ones out and the new ones back in.

I know what your problem is... your wheels are too big. I'll be happy to swap them for my stock ones to help you out mate. :D

I got my old bushes out by heating the end of the bar up with a torch then hit the bush out with a mallet.

I might be accused of being weird but that post gave me one of the funniest mental images I've had in ages ...

 

Chris, be wary of blue print pads. I had these overheat on me many times. They weren't up to the job at all. Replaced them after only a couple of months.

Cheers...well it wont take me long to wa*k them out again...Ill replace them with better ones next time....spent too much on my car already!..lol....What do u recomend?:D

Porterfield RS - they're from the states but SE Nissan also supply them. Craig has imported them before but I think in the end he didn't save much. They cost about £130 a set which I know is a lot of dosh but it's hell of a lot cheaper than the car not stopping.

 

Alternatively, many people on here have tried EBC Green & Red stuff with varying results - go for a search.

 

Metal Matrix from the states are popular on tt.net - I had these on the rear and they were fine but, to be honest, the rear isn't a very good test.

I had the old brake judder too...

Like many other people replaced the discs, no help.

 

Turned out to be the tension bar bushes (check for fluid leak). I bought new adjustable tension bars, but you can buy just the bushes from http://www.suspension.com -

You might have to rebuild re seal and give a good clean to your caliper pistons. Mine had warped new discs within 5k. I reckon that the sticking pistons had meant that each caliper was applying breaking force unevenly. This results in one side of the disc heating much faster and hotter than the other side in heavier braking. Result warping. Eventually it gets worse, wears down the high spots and the disc eventually sets warped.

 

A £35 Nissan seal kit, new 3g discs and a few hours cleaning and changing the seals restored my brakes to new performance. They are still great and no sign of the slightest judder or vibe. Been through the poly tie rod bushes too - it changed and reduced it but did not stop it. It was the pistons sticking on mine.

 

The main seals were fine but the dust bellows were well perished and a lot of dirt was jamming 2 pistons on each caliper. No corrosion luckily. I needed high air pressure to get the sticking pistons out. Once done you can push the pistons back in with your fingers - no need for levers. If you need to apply lever force you pistons are sticking too.
