I have read what you have said about costs....new server etc etc. When this site was originally envisaged...none of this was taken into account..you wanted a 300zx community...now this has developed...we now need to subscribe...etc...please note I have every respect for what you have done......but like the rest of the internet/e-mail community...a good original idea has resulted in ..if i could just....if had a bit of money....if....if...if... etc.....and this has now killed of your original intentions.......the old system worked fine....slow yes...pain yes.....gash post.....yes....but what heve we gained by "development"...please let me know if I am missing anything....or let me know what I already know....what we have lost.......like most other forums.......development has lost what we already here for...the 300...now the forum is an advertisers forum.............money has become involved.....and now we have lost it......intiative...humour..arse post...........etc etc al entertaining.....now not entertaining....now a pain.....

Please dont take this the wrong way..apprecitae all what you have done....just feel we have lost something we all once had..please correct me if you feel wrong....but please dont quote " u dont get something for nothing" at me....as this is/was the whole intention at the beginning......no doubt.......

Yes I feel that the forum has lost something, but we where naive thinking that we can have as much bandwidth as we wanted. Time to move on, and now yes we have to pay. That's what happens when things get more successful, we needed more than what we are getting.

I was very sceptical about it all at once, and to be truthful I miss the old forum, how ever we can not deny that Craig and every one involved has done a great job. On contrary to my belief new members are coming on, paying and staying which is really the biggest success of all.

We shouldnt think of it what we have lost, but what we have gained. We have a fantastic new server, which is fast, great BBS which is efficent and clear and we still have new faces popping up every now and then. Some come for the help and go, but some have stayed and contributed to the new forum on one form or another.

Whats £20? 100 miles petrol, ½ a night out.

Stuart

Stuart, you're not wrong. I can't comment on what it used to be like as I only got here 10 months ago.

But when I found this place, it was well worth the dosh.

As Heinlein said - tanstaafl (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). You can't have "free" internet services. They'll be paid for by advertisers, sponsors, people with an ulterior motive, be crap services or some other fault.

It;s strange that the provision of a "better" (technically and bandwidth-ly) service has caused some indefinable something to leave the forum - but nothing has banned people from contributing so there was no reason for them to leave.

True, the Terminator-like slagging matches turn a lot of people off but you can't legislate for the actions of children.

If there is a choice between a lumpy badly performing forum held together by gaffer tape and a nice squeaky clean one with paid for bandwidth, I'll take this one - thanks to all who made it possible.

I agree with Gio, actually I seem to agree with Gio on most things! Spooky! Must be the volcano's again!

I agree, I will from now on get my moneys worth and keep my childish antics to the forums I paid for! ROFL :D

what was the alternative tho? lose the site altogether. or maybe the internet pixies would have paid for it? :)

like Gio, I havnt been here that long really, but I must say I think its all coming together now, it went a little quiet to start with but now its just as mad as ever imo

I gotta admit, I first thought, why should I have to pay to use this place, its the internet, free access for all. trouble is someone somewhere has to pay for the hardware, software, bandwidth etc.

so really £20 seems very reasonable, esp when you think how much finding this place has prob saved you!

And now for a question to all the Admin.

As a load of posts have required moderating?

Why havent you guys moderated any of them?

you cant tell me that the slagging and swearing and the likes of Bonzai ect comming back on does not desearve moderating, because thats was the main reason for it?

well I can edit this but haven't found out how to move a thread yet

Hi Warren, sorry for using your post to try a "moderator's edit" but you did raise the question :)

I think the idea is that if people are concerned about a post in a moderated forum, then click on the button and the mods get e-mailed. From memory, I've only had one and we did something about that.

I think Craig is the only one who can actually move threads but if you notice, a lot more of the forums are now able to be moderated so hopefully it's getting there. Also Craig did do a lot of clearing up after the last little *ahem* episode.

Cheers - HTH - Gio

Oi, Duffy - stop poking the moderators in the eye!

In defense of the moderators, I guess its a hard job. I mean who this forum is very active and I personally don;t think there are enough moderators. But I see it as our jobs to help out here. All we need to do if we think things are getting alittle out of hand or thee is a little hard core swearing going on is click on the little "report to this post to moderator" hyperlink at the bottom right of each post. ;)

We can make this world a safer place for our children LOL.

:D

Just fyi we do have a little forum of our own where we discuss things. But none of us wants to be heavy-handed - especially us newbies! After all loads of original members have been around for far longer.

IMO, I don't see it as my "job" to impose my own opinions on the forums but to respond to others reporting something that makes them unhappy.

Mustn't allow this near-God-like moderator power to go to my head (only Craig is allowed to be omniwhatsit!) lol

Cheers - Gio

That's a better way of putting it. That's kinda what I was trying to say but couldn't find the words.

You get what you pay for. With a bit of money the forum can be faster and more reliable. The only downside at the moment is that there seem to be much fewer postings. I joined just before the forum changed and there was a new post almost every minute of the day. Now there hardly seems to be anyone one here at all. Shame!:(

I think the level of postings on here is just right IMO.

A busy forum may be good but is hard work to read through. I like to learn loads about my car so I read every post.

Look at the top of the page and you'll see that there's loads of people on here. It's just that none of them are posting. I think they are all a bunch of voyeurs!

We are all vultures waiting for someone to post so we can all dive in and have our 2p!

Good to see that 'submarine' has re-surfaced. Been anywhere nice? Oh, sorry, I guess you wouldn't know:D :D :D

Like Gio, as a moderator I don't expect to have to impose my opinion on anyone and whilst I am always tempted to correct grammar and spelling I have limited my edits to only items that are particuarly offensive or are legally risky. So far I don't recollect having to alter anything as I've always been beaten to it by the others.

when it was started, it was on a bad free service.

then it moved to my own equipment, but hosting and bandwidth was free, because it was with my employer

i left them over a year ago, and the site has only just moved on....

please note I have every respect for what you have done......but like the rest of the internet/e-mail community...a good original idea has resulted in ..if i could just....if had a bit of money....if....if...if... etc.....and this has now killed of your original intentions.......the old system worked fine....slow yes...pain yes.....gash post.....yes....but what heve we gained by "development"...please let me know if I am missing anything....or let me know what I already know....what we have lost.......like most other forums.......development has lost what we already here for...the 300...now the forum is an advertisers forum.............money has become involved.....

if you read some of the many posts i have made, you will know i was NEVER in it for the money, the idea is to keep the forum here ad infinitum, funded by itself

and see above, it could not have stayed as it was

as i said, it was nothing for nothing, because it cost nothing to keep it there, now it doesnt....

the site moves a lot of data, and that does cost, fact of life.

you tell me how we can strike a balance between those that help to keep the server here, and those that decline...

what extra value should the subscribers give to the non subscribers ?

I might have got the 'gist' of your post wrong so if I've misunderstood, please forgive me.

I don't think it's fair to say you need to subscribe. It's optional.

In terms of what you get - you get forums which tend to be frequented by the more experienced people and quality of technical advice is likely to be better. Most people will have seen 'technical' suggestions which have come from orifices which are not normally associated with verbal communication.

You get a sense of belonging and a matching respect from others.

Where the above isn't true you get a great forum to debate your lack of respect.

And you get to understand what is meant by all the references to swearing / moderation / etc in the posts above.

Pay up - it's worth it. And I don't even own a Z !

new to this site (1 week) and dont want to ruffle any feathers, BUT what i have learned about my new car in the last week has been invaluable.

havn't paid a penny for all the information i have gotten, how much would it have cost to find out why this or that has suddenly lit up at 90mph from nissan dealership (if they'd let an import in!!)

Someone tell me who to give my twenty quid to and its yours!!!

Darren, I think there's a sticky at the top of this forum about why the site is set up the way it is. Details are in there.

And welcome.

I think Craig is the only one who can actually move threads

Hi Gio, there is a select box at the bottom of the page called admin options which has various tools. I have been moving a few incorrectly placed threads into the correct areas and leaving a link in its place, there are also other options available.

Warren, as agreed with the others when someone has requested action it has been taken (if appropriate).

You guys also have to remember that we cannot moderate all the time, this is my first viewing of the site today (and checking home email) and it is now 12.40am.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Martin

PLEASE, PLEASE tell me it was one of mine??? Fame Academy beckons! LOL :D

Have a Pop Stars - The Rivals...ohhhh fame at last! LMFAO :D :D :D

Have only just returned to the forum after a protracted absence due to the levels some members were abseiling down towards, but IMHO, this forum is just as good as the old one. The threads are more organised and now you can ignore those that don't apply / get out of hand as more than likely they are in a different forum.

I like the new site and have happily paid £20 to Craig for the privilege of saving thousands of £s and hours of time on my Zed.

Anita.

After a little while looking and reading bits and pieces on here, posting a few questions etc, I quickly realised this place was a must if you had a Z.

The help I got from everyone saved me time and money and I WANTED to send my £20 just to do my bit to ensure "300zx.co.uk" continued.

viva la Z.

I think the forum is quieter for 3 reasons.....

1. There are more forums, so posts get spread more thinly.

2. People take the forum more seriously now that they pay 4 it, so are more hesitant about posting.

3. Some who haven't joined are probably quieter or absent as a result.

I also see the changes a bit like those in sports when they go from amateur to professional....they lose something. But it's a great forum setup, and most ppl are civil and witty (hope I don't have 2 eat my words!). I'm getting better all the time as well !:D
