Hi:( :( :( :(

I think the Title says it all!

So what pistons do I get?

Where is the cheapest place to get them?

How much can I bore the block out and what are the consequences of this?

mark - i know a top engineer that does all our rebore/resurface work. he can usually get standard (oversize) pistons etc at very good prices. let me know if you want anything

Presumably this is for the engine with the 'head gasket' problem ?

Well pistons, Jim Wolf Tech make very good units.

JE racing make custom pistons

Eagle make pistons.

there is an interesting tech link on TTNET regarding reboring ect.

but some blocks supposedly are good to 3.2 litre on a rebore.

it all depends on what and where you want to end up.

But any of the above companies will make custom pistons for you.

Then of course finding a company capable of redoing the block ect (i know im laughing aswell) is going to be the hardest task.

Thanks guys,

I will probably be contacting you at some point in the future about this!

Andy,

Yes you are right, it is that engine, the piston and bore are still serviceable but Darren doesn't advise putting it back together and using it without a compromise on its capabilities in the future!

In other words its F***ED!

Does anyone know the Samaritans Number?

Mark

No need for the Samaritans Mark, your be rolling in it soon mate! LOL

:D :D :D

were both in the soup bud my piston went bout 2 months ago and its still in the garage!! have you thought bout a re-con or a second hand engine bud??? i had a quote for pistons 1200 squids!! add all the laubor and rebore for me it worked out cheper to get another engine!!

good news is im having my old engine to play with at home so i can assess the damage if the bore's r knackerd i will probably get another block but have the crank ground and enlargen the oilways with new shells etc!!

good luck to ya!

Grasshopper are fitting a few Zeds with Jun pistons at the moment so Johnny tells me so try him for a price.

Thanks guys the engine is in bits at the mo!

I am TT'ing a convertible,

I have been told you can get JE or JWT pistons to your spec for around $780!

I have also been offered a short engine as well, so things aren't totally bad!

Mark

I bought some, but didn't end up using them, re-sold em at the time. I have heard they are very noisey during warm up as they expand a little. I have also heard this could be the cause of oil loss.

They really require special bedding in with a semi / non-synthetic oil (forgot which one), otherwise the oil wont coat the cylinder walls enough in the future. Running at 3000rpm for a 1000miles or so with little throttle can also be annoying!

I ordered the JE Oversized by 1mm to 8:1 compression.

750 US Dollars + Shipping. Another time I'd stick to 0.5 oversizing maximum.

Got mine from here...

They take more like 6-8weeks to be make, not 2 weeks.

-------------

Here's an email I sent a while back about them...

Yes they are JE which myself and a few other people took a while to decide on. The reason for going for JE was because they were much stronger than stock, can take a lot more pounding and lots of other people on tt.net have them! JE can also be quite reasonable compared to other makes and it appears to be top quality. They are basically 1mm bigger than stock which was a special request, as most people go for 0.5mm. But as the cost was the same I thought why go half the way. You can go bigger than 1mm, but I didn't want any worry of thin walls or heat transference, most people I spoke to seamed to think that 1mm was the safest max. Normal compression is 8.5:1, I decided on 8:1 so it's not too low before the turbos start to kick in (so we think!). Yes, They were for my turbo car, I would assume you'd go for very different compression ratios on a stock 300.

The other important thing is JE come with piston rings which saves you getting them from Nissan.

While you're in the engine I would advise getting a full gasket set ( from Courtesy Nissan of course) which comes with new oil seals, also get new head bolts. Other things you may want to consider is a new detonation sensor, EGR bypass plate, PVC valves, Oil pump, engine mounts and various hoses behind the engine which could break.

Hi Jez,

Thanks for the advice, I have asked on TTnet about pistons, Coz at Concept Z was the only person to get back to me.

He said the JE pistons can suffer from Piston slap, so that maybe accounts for the noise problem!

He also highly recommended Arias Pistons, which we were only a few dollars more. I contacted their website in America and asked how much and if they were flexible with regard to postage:o

They then put me in contact with Arias pistons UK, who actually make pistons to your specification in 4-6weeks. Whether they make them for the states or are a subsidairy, I have yet to find out when they recontact me, with a price!

Jez why did you go for the 0.5mm overbore as oposed to the 1mm in the end?

Mark

Remember the JE price includes piston rings.

"noise problem" - Is only during warm up, do with the material used to make 'em expanding to the correct size on warm up. Compare the material (forgot what it is, but it's cast) with the Arias ones.

Jez.
