Almost couldn't believe it, the shop that did my suspension didn't tighten everything up correctly, the nuts on the top of one front shock were all coming off. I've done them up, but what I need to know is how tight should they be?

I guess lock the first nut down gently until it almost starts to twist the rubber underneath...(with the car on the ground), then tighten the second nut against it. Am I missing any other parts, just two nuts right?

Just sending this message to the top...

Jez,

According to the manual, and presuming you mean the strut top nut, there should only be one nut, a lock nut.. Unless it's aftermarket shocks, they could be different..

Anyhow, I've chopped out the bit of the manual that shows the torque settings for the front suspension bolts and attached it here. The torque settings are given as "Nm (kg/m, ft/lb)".

Thanks,

I've highlighted the nut and thread I'm talking about, but does this sit directly on a rubber boot, mine does... this appears wrong. You can't tighten a nut against that, it'll bugger it surely?

Hmmm - I can't quite remember off the top of my head, but I'll take a look at mine at lunchtime and check :) (Unless anyone beats me to it with an answer)

By the looks of it the one highlighted is the one in the middle. Because 3 bolts are so close together, it would have looked messy with all of them being labled. So I think they have labled 2 of them one bracket one and the middle one. I think we can presume the other bracket one is the same torque as the other side.

Well my wheel nearly fell of the other day.

Tosser didn't manage to tighten the nuts up!!!!

Jez - looked at mine tonight and it does look like they tighten down onto the rubber thing.. looks could be deceptive as it was a bit dark so I'll check again properly tomorrow, and try to remember to take a pic for you..

I tried to tighten the middle nut and it just turned the whole thing.

Thanks, can you try to see what washer(s) are in place etc....

Thanks

Washers? Nah, only the lock washer under the nut. The rubber bush the strut goes through has a metal insert down its length so, no, tightening the nut WON'T bugger the rubber up....
