Hi lads

Basically went out in the car the other day to go up to the lake district and front window wasn't demisted at all, car was idling for over an hour and then I drove with my gf for about 5 miles and still couldn't see out the window I tried all the settings on the climate control, and various temp from 10 - 40 and even the demist switch was doing nothing.

Whats happened? Is there a fuse for the front demister? or something else

Car is a 89 auto

cheers Tom

The climate control pods control the actuators on the vent unit (situated behind the centre radio cubby hidden from view) and the fan unit. That year has just a basic demist function (the one with the windscreen on it) that will actuate the flap in the unit for the screen. If you still have working aircon you can use Auto function too.

But as in all things try the fuse mentioned above first.

right lads thanks for reply

fuse is fine

Front and rear demister switches light up when pressed but only the rear on actually works

When i press the front demister switch air only comes out of the central vents above the radio but theres nothing coming out of the vents under the windscreen no hot or cold air

cheers Tom

anyone????

Can i access the vents inside if i take out the radio, vents and centre dash trims????

You could either have a problem with the aircon ecu, black box above the left foot/clutch just behind the tunnel panel or the actuators for the ducts.

You wont be able to access anything of any use with the radio bezel out, just the middle duct opening and below that sits the housing for the heater matrix.

Get a torch, push the drivers seat as far back as you can and stick your head under where the clutch pedal is or would be if an auto, you might see with the ecu in the way i cant remember off hand, but the flap that controls the water into the matrix is at the bottom of the housing just above the tunnel. See if that opens or closes, by raising or decreasing the temp on the control pod, this would be for the heat or lack of in your case.

The other controls iirc sit behind the glovebox, but i will do some research and pop up some pics if i can find what im looking for :thumbup1:

When you press the front demist button can you hear the demist flap actuator moving? Should be a faint whir audible with engine off. If not the flap may be jammed or the actuator not working. Mine tries to move but is jammed. Afraid I don't know how to access the actuator without taking the whole dash out so if anybody does I'll be reading with interest too!
