Restoration

OK guys,

I've been away for some time now (although always lurking in the background), but at last I am back :) Some of you may know the last time I was on here, I was planning a full restoration of my j-spec lwb auto TT. Well due to a practically non-existent budget and busy lifestyle its took me all year to finish building a 26'x12' shed, solely for the Z.

Started the car yesterday evening for the first time since November 2013!! Would you believe she started on the first turn of the key (after circulating oil and building pressure), although with a hunting idle and burst brake line somewhere.

As said this is a full restoration, including,

Major bodywork renovation,

Respray,

Engine out for deletes, service etc

Engine bay respray,

Auto to manual conversion,

Interior retrim.

I plan on doing all the work myself except possibly the retrim, and will post as many pictures as possible. The main thing I would ask from you guys is for your advice. I am capable of all the work, however, I do need a lot of advice. My main worry at the moment is the best order of work and paint. I think doing all the bodywork first is correct and if so I need to know what kind of paint to use, and therefore what primer I need to use. Googling this has just left me confused. I like the idea of painting it the ford focus white, that has the hint of blue. But I think this is a pearlescent, and above what I am capable of spraying. Can anyone help so far???

Thanks

What I know about bodywork can be sprayed on the back of a matchbox I'm afraid :wack:

Thanks anyway, mate. I'm sure I'll have some questions for you at a later date though ;) The bodywork itself I know what I'm doing, its just I'm unsure what paint/primer I can use at home cellulose, 2k etc?

If its frozen white its not pearl but ford do a pearl which looks like a baby blue in the shade and a white with blue pearl in the sun...

The frozen white comes in base and clear or a solid white no clear needed the base and clear seems to keeep its shine better I find the solid dulls off and needs polishing all the time...

im sure a lot of vans are painted in solid cause they dull of but the cars in the same colour keep there shine...

U will want 2k but u need a good mask its quite nasty...

Thanks terry, am I right in thinking that a pearl is not a diy job?

I aint a painter or bodywork but I've helped paint my zed to many times,

The pearl you put your base coat on like normal then you put the pearl in a binder of some sort and put the amount of coats on, the more coats the more effect,

Then you clear coat,

But I think you have to be good at putting paint on and not going back over where you have been you need the coats even..

im sure if u paint you'll get it on fine...

just remember look after your lungs and atleast get one of them 2k masks, its ment to be air fed and its horrible...

and good luck...I hate bodywork its the worse lol...

Thanks mate, I've just been reading on the st owners site (sorry). Apparently ford never did a pearl white, its called frozen white or ice white (changed the name on a facelift) and the blue effect is some kind of pigment in the clear coat. Does this sound correct to anyone?
