I've got 2 pc's with rg45 connectors on the main boards. Is it as simple as connecting them with a cable or do I need special software to connect them?

Cheers guys

To connect them directly together you would need an RJ45 crossover cable - If you use a normal cable you must buy a hub and connect each computer into that with its own RJ45 cable - you can buy them quite cheaply at most places these days.

if your only connecting 2 pc's ie directly together, no hub, then you need a crossover cable/connector. thats all you need

Connect both PC's via a CROSSOVER cable, this is important if you don't network through a hub. Took me a week to find that out when I did mine. I have Win98, networked over TCP/IP.

I think you right click on Network Neighbourhood, click properties, go to TCP/IP networking properties, assign a random IP address, up to 0-254.0-254.0-254.1-254, eg mine is 100.100.100.100 and my other pc is 100.100.100.101.

Give them a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Give your PCs a name eg PC1 and PC2 and a group eg HOME. Press OK then let windows do it's work - you may need your windows disk for files to be copied from.

If you have a firewall - you'll have to configure it to let the other PC in.

There are lots of websites around dedicated to networking, put in 'peer to peer network' and 'crossover cable' in a Google search and you should get some.

Linux is easier.

With XP you may need 800 more mouse clicks.

lol, so you need a crossover cable!! got it! (only 1, not 3!) :D
