Sidelight & Indicator Switchback Bulb.....Updated !!

I fit my switchback bulbs about 18 months but having in the most reason MOT the examiner tell me it's discolored i thought i'd better give it some attention.

What he meant was with sidelights on and you indicated it flashed amber/white/amber/white so gave the impression the colour was wrong as it alternated fast.

Now it flashes amber/off/amber/off just like side repeater and mirrors in my case and then when signalling is finished it returns to white or sidelights.

I did buy some new bulbs but they're no better than the first ones i bought and worked the same, i have actually fit an in-line delay relay module to make it work as you see.

Whilst i was happily soldering away today i have put in the wiring required to run a similar thing as i may or may not put something in the headlight when they get some treatment over the winter which is mainly 99 spec inserts.

Can you not the get the side light back on instantly after the indicator stops flashing?

It does look much better and clearer now, just thought the delay in the sidelight might be an issue.

Ooooh you do rain on my parade !!

I actually quite like the delay Graham and have seen it on modern cars, not sure on it's legality though retro fitted but expect it cannot be any different, wonder if it's to switch back within a second or so to meet regs ?

If i do need a sidelight on at all times at the front then i'll just pop the bulb back in the fog housing for the test and then remove again.

I do have some different modules and these switch a tad quicker and as you well know an instant switchback would see a normal relay used :thumbup1:.

I dont mean to rain on your parade mate as i admire the work you do and you are always meticulous, i wondered if the delay in the sidelight relighting would be an MOT issue or not

I often tell my examiner 'my ideas' if you like and he often replies 'it's not in the test'.

I have read this one line that i think vaguely might apply to the switchback 'delay' and it's

All lights must light without excessive delay.

As far as i can make out there is no mention as yet of these kind of lights, the regs are more concerned with a secure switch, not obscured, same height, etc.

Also, i read it mentions colour, white is obviously the one and only to have but also it can have a blue tinge and because my halo's are currently the rgb type they do maintain other colours still in the smd when white is chosen on the remote as seen on the above video, so i now believe that these are fine also but i can turn them off if i so wish.

Looks very nice, I'm surprised the mot tester didn't advise a position light being affected by the operation of another lamp is a failure, I suppose as you have a position light within your headlight that's the way around it, nice set up though mate.

Would the red highlighted bit be more in regard to a loose earth perhaps, ie a tail light flashing as well in the next door chamber under indication ?

The halo in the headlight i did in fact turn off for the test as it is a coloured remote controlled halo, i have chosen white for that on the vid as in real life it does have a blue tinge but i do believe this is acceptable for mot test so next time i shall leave it on.

Well if your lights in your headlamp units were off when your position (sidelights) were on this would make your white lights in your bumper act as position (sidelight). Now if that white light switched off when indicator is switched on then this makes it adversely affected by the operation of another lamp which = a failure item, the bit you wrote in red would be more directed at say a hid lamp where it's ballast resistor didn't power up the lamp for a given time.

The headlight halo was off for sure when it was tested however, the switchback 6 months ago in it's mot didn't work as it does in this update.

It flashed white/yellow/white/yellow under indication with the sidelights on ?

Whereas now i believe it works better and that's yellow/off/yellow/off when sidelights are on as indicator is king.

I am keeping the halo in the headlight so based on your expertise i am ok for next years mot.

Uk regs do not allow a dual function light - so it's actually mentioned then ?

As it's wired now effectively every time your indicator flashes on your position light on that side goes off so your position light is being adversely affected by the indicator, and yes dual function lamps as found on European cars is a reason for rejection.

And also if you claim your halos in your headlamps are your position lamps then if your indicators flash yellow/white/yellow/white then this would technically fail due to your indicators being incorrect color.

Yes he did advise for incorrect signal colour as the movement is of course fast but when i turned the sidelights off and therefore showed him yellow/off/yellow/off he was happy, soon hoodwinked, haha and removed it.

The place i go to i know them well and they're incredibly straight and isn't testing basically a lot of common sense based around the rule book.

Mots are anything but common sense, just remember to have your halos on for mot test as your position lights and leave the white lights in your bumper off for the whole test. :thumbup1:
