Some of you may know I have been trying to source a good, none smoking drivers side turbo. However, does anyone have any experience with reconditioned units? Can anyone recommend someone that can rebuild stock turbos reliably?

Thanks

There's not much too them tbh, if your mechanically minded you may wish to rebuild them yourself. Rebuilds seem to have thier haters, stating they just don't last as long. I don't see why they shouldn't and the quality if the rebuild make be the deciding factor. If you do decide to go home method, check around to find a turbo shop that will balance them many of them will only balance what they have built, luckily there's one near me that will balance home builds and they WILL need balancing without it they won't last five minutes.

In hindsight would I have rebuilds again, well after buying genuine garret kits and paying for balancing the costs were higher than I first expected, both were rebuilt as I didn't know which has leaking. It might be only marginally more expensive that it's viable to buy a brand new chra from the states. I chose to have rebuilt stockers due to financial constraints at that time but I wish I'd had the funds to replace them with a quality BB turbo at that point.

If your prepared to pull the engine etc shop around and investigate your options prices for turbo rebuilds and parts/labour vary wildly. A proper job by a proper professional isn't going to be cheap like the budgey. I spoke to one guy proclaiming cheap rebuilds and after some questions he let slip that they arnt balanced. You get what you pay for.

Thanks guys,

Last year the nearside turbo was done in my garage with the engine in. This time, to change the offside one we are lifting the engine out. I have had a look on Z1Motorsport.com and they are very expensive. I have looked on ebay and found some very cheap Chinese specials.

I could do with having a chat to Mark at Automodz, do you have any contact info? I am not confident enough to rebuild myself but am interested in speaking to someone who has done before..

Thanks

Pretty sure Jim at PowerZed had a rebuilt set in stock as well

Pretty sure that place needs to be avoided at all costs.

yes defo ... had 2 customers now with turbos from them .. both Smoking from install ... and about 3 other bad reports of the same type of fail

I was thinking of the balancing rather than rebuild, but if they have history then fair enough!
