I've been a cat owner for many years but never had a dog. Love a good sausage which is why I am interested in a Dachshund puppy. Anyone have any experience with them? I am going to look at some 8 week old puppies on Monday with a view to buy so anything I should look out for and consider?

Hi mate,

I just asked my other half as she is a vet nurse. When you go to see them you need to check out the mother if not able to check both parents for back issues as they suffer from disc problems. As for the puppies it's just general health stuff really like discharge from eyes or nose, temperament and socialising.

That's about it with the sausage dog.

The suffer from back problems, think how long that spine in a proportionate scale. I really like them, funny little tykes but we decided against one when we considered the health implications long term. If you want one look for the shorter ones rather than the very long bodied ones. In terms of temperament they have a habit if being hard to train and being snappy. My mrs is a groomer so she sees lots of different breeds etc, she also did lots of homework when we were looking for a dog. Have a really long think, it's quite sad really how many people buy the wrong breeds, huskies and collies etc get brought by people with no time to exercise them that live in tone then wonder why the dog is destructive etc. Working dogs are for working, if you want a lap dog that's what you should buy.

What sorta of dog will fit with your lifestyle is pretty important consideration. We have a mid sized terrier, a utility dog but he is out over the feilds for at least an hour everyday and more often than not goes to work with my other half, he is thankfully good as gold.

My friend and his Girlfriend had one of these and unfortunately had to have it put down as it damaged its back when prancing around in the garden. She was a few years old, but they got another not long after.

I have no idea how likely this is and don't mean to put a downer on getting a dog as anything could happen.

I've got a cocker spaniel, lovely temperament. Perfect family dog, little ones can pull on her tail and she won't bat an eyelid. Loves kids.

No experience of a sausage dog.

I've got a deaf white female staffy your welcome too lol one day with her will put you off dogs for life lol

12 bore to the face! Only joking, I would never hurt an animal, except flies.

Enjoy and welcome to the world of rainy walks and dog poop on the hands when your poopy bag splits!!!!

I own 2 GSP's
