Hi Guys, pulled up at my house last night and steam was pouring out from under the bonnet, after a bit of cooling down I found one of the water pipes at the rear of the engine had popped a hole causing the loss of water. so, I go to my spare car, remove the good one and replace it in about 3 hours. Must say, having a spare car is a must!!.

I then proceeded to fill her up! only to find im pouring water in the header tank and getting wet feet at the same time... so my question is how much of a inconvenience is having no water in the header tank.

The overflow tank is there for water to be returned to the rad by a syphonic effect on cool down when the cooling system creates vacume....as stated above water filling is done via the rad

I did fill the system by the rad, don't worry, just wanted to know any problems running with a holy header

it would of been the top of the tank..the filler tube just sits in with not a water tight seal. Iff you run with a leaking tank at the bottom mate then any coolant that expands off from the rad will not be able to get sucked back in so in theory you will be running a total loss cooling system iff that makes sense.
