Hi,i am on my 3rd tt after someone smashed my last one up,they have all been imports.now my enquiry is when you press the fog switch the rear lights come on as does all imports, does anybody no how to wire it so only front fogs come on,any help much appreciated.

Welcome to the club. Can't really answer your question on the wiring but... Someone might correct me but I'm pretty sure imports would normally only have front fogs and usually have something aftermarket for the rears on a separate switch. Mine are on a separate switch but currently use the rear light cluster.

thanks for reply, thats right only front fogs,so i just want it to turn them on,and disconnect tail lights and side lights, dont no why they did this, when the light switch turns on the rest.

Welcome to the club mate!

And yes; what Lee said above - imports only have front fogs, a rear must be fitted retrospectively for MOT/legal reasons in the UK; and on a separate switch with a "tell tail" light to show they're on. Hence the OEM fog light switch should only work the front fogs - which are wired into a relay to come on only when the regular lights are on; not completely on their own....

i no that thanks all imports are the same ,and fog switch puts on front fogs, side lights front and rear, and rear bumper lights, regardless of ignition on or not.Ive had 3 and all did the same, thats how there wired for some stupid reason, but i just want mine to turn on front fogs only.thanks all

They are connected unfortunately or why else would you only have the fog lights on with no side lights when driving in fog, there will be a feed from the fog switch to eliminate the side lights, but i dont think anyone has ever done it as far as i know.

cause you side lights are switched on by your main light switch,so your rear lights would already be on,so as in other cars fog switch should turn on front or rear fogs

Nissan300zx import side light circuit both rear and front is activated when the front spot lights are switched on as standard, this is to prevent driving with just front spot lights on and no rear side lights, see lots of cars with front fogs / spots on in low light level, of course the newer cars with day light running lights do run with no rear side lights but they are not designated spot/fog lamps, sure if you really wanted it that way the circuit could be reworked but not sure why you would.

Jeff

can you tell me how please jeff

Ok will take a look at the circuit and come back to you.

1) You would need to fit a diode into the main switch feed and change it to come from the side lights and not the permanent 12v supply............. this will mean the fogs only come on with front and rear lights on......

2) You then need to just cut the feed wire (and insulate it) to the side lights that feeds them when the fog light switch is on.

3) You would need to install a switch, relay and fuse for the rear fog light circuit only.

I think thats it...... a bit late and need sleep....... hope it helps.......

many thanks for reply, but i wanted it to just turn on front fogs so as to be different ,like newer cars just have front side lights on,might just buy some led strips instead ,be easier ,thanks mark

Your front fogs aren't DRLs though. Not unless you pull them apart and fit lots of LEDs in them. :)

Ok have had a look and the fog light relay under the bonnet which is activated when the fog lights switch is pressed is a double pole arrangement, one set for the fog lights and one set for the side light circuit.

Have added three pictures below, the first so you know where to find the relay and its base, the second and third show the relay ( removed ) and the connection layout of the base. Simply put by interrupting ( disconnecting ) the side light circuit the fog lights will work independent then, to do this undo the fusebox and you can access either one of the side light feed cables as shown in pic 3, cut and insulate it and that`s it.

Just for clarification of law, it is ILLEGAL to use front (or rear) fogs when there is no reduced visibility.

See this for reference: https://www.gov.uk/driving-adverse-weather-conditions-226-to-237/fog-234-to-236

In my younger days I got pulled and fined by the local plod for driving with my front fogs on.

DRL's on modern cars are a completely different entity, and are of low intensity so as not to cause issues with blinding other road users.

Surely a more sensible solution would be to have the sidelights (which are in the fog units themselves) to operate on a separate switch which can make them independent of the rear lights.

Stick a 501 LED wedge in them, and you would have your modern look DRL's without risk of the rozzers being pissed at you.

Good point Lexx, not sure if it makes any difference but the standard import bulbs fitted in the front fog lights are only 35 watt so are quite low power.
