Any VAG mechanics on here?

Having replaced the clutch and flywheel on my sons Audi S3, (57 plate) we can't for the love of god get the transfer box shaft to seat it the gearbox properly it basically stops about 20mm apart from the gearbox housing.

 

Is there some special knack of getting the shaft in? Spent nearly 5 hours just on this now!

    should be just on split ring that needs a little force tap to get it to locate correctly
