Boost controller and mapping - how what why?

Hi guys,

Okay please forgive my naivety, but could someone please explain how people use boost controllers?

Controller in question is the greddy profec 2. If I had a map done on the car, would this be just tweaking the greddy to get the right boost, gain etc for the desired bhp, or would it be creating a base map and the using the boost controller on a daily basis to tweak or change the amount of boost running?...

Kind of confused as to how it is used!! I would imagine that when someone says the car will be mapped, they mean the mapping is done using the greddy and then you leave the controllable where they are for good?

Im just discussing the high spec black one from eBay, hopefully going to pick it up soon! Just interested in how much bhp it can run safely as it is pretty well built from what I can tell.

Best regards,

William

I think you already know this so sorry if it's sucking eggs, but the map is seperate to the EBC. The map is done on the ecu and is all about fueling and timing and what the engine should do in different situations.

The EBC interupts the feed to the wastegate actuators to control the flow of exhaust gas that reaches the power turbine. The advantages are, selectable boost levels, variable boost harshness or how it comes on boost, stuff like safety mode and overboost buttons.

I think of it like if you want your house at 20 degrees, you can either set the thermostat to 20. Or you can set it to 40, to make your heating go to maximum attack, then once it is at 20 you can turn the dial back down to 20, smug that you tricked it.

An ebc can do that on the actuator feed line to reduce turbo lag a bit. And control wandering boost.

As I understand it, following a map you can turn the boost down from there but perhaps not up. Noz set my car to max reliable boost anyway so higher would be daft.

I hope this is about right, if I am wrong please know that I am trying to be helpful not trying to be smart.

Hello! Thanks for the reply, that exactly what I was unsure about!

So on a built engine would you set a base map on it of 500bhp for example, and then use the boost controller to tweak when the tubs spool etc to get a solid setup?

Best regards

If you get turbonoz to do it he will set the EBC up too. There are a load of settings on them to get lost in. Gain is how hard it comes on boost and is probably the most technical one.

You can map a car without ebc

You can fit ebc to a car that isnt mapped

But if you just slap an ebc on (or use jets or whatever) and increase boost, the engine doesn't know what to do with the extra air.

A remap isn't that much and neither is an ebc, not after an engine rebuild. Get both and the mapping will get the car running as well as it possibly can with the pick and mix of tuning parts it has, both in terms of power and reliability.

Your best of taking it to Noel for him to sit there and map it properly, he can then safely monitor what's going on providing you with the best power and safety. A poor map or tune however you wish to put it will kill the thing quite quickly, who knows how it's currently running and I would want it assessed by an expert before you go hitting boost. Also don't you dare buy it and not come round mine with it lol, I want a passenger ride.

Haha you're on. Yeah I would be hoping for around 500bhp and think that is probably reasonable with the spec, but will try and have a chat to Noel about it. As long as the seller will be happy to have it mapped by him as it is included in the price of the sale.

My only worry is that the guy has built this beautiful machine, capable of good power, but has been running it at 300bhp... why?!!! :p just makes my mind wander

What does a map usually cost out of interest?

He is based in Norwich, so not close... Unfortunately I am going on holiday monday for two weeks. Had my offer accepted yesterday, but all my time is tied up with carting the girlfriend around and sorting bits before we leave. SOOO, probably mid - end sept for a viewing. If I get comfortable enough with the spec of the car I am happy to leave a deposit with him without a viewing, but just want to be certain about achievable power!! Otherwise I would buy back my blue one which is in ringwood and considerably cheaper!! Having pics sent this weekend hopefully as a lot of the ebay photos were outdated.

... I say Unfortunately like I don't want to go away, but I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But also I would like to come home to a Zed ;)

I know the car and the reason it has been at stockish power is due to it not having been mapped. Mark (Automodz) has worked on it, give him a call and have a chat :)

Great stuff thanks for the heads up Noz! Also explains the sellers ambiguity when asking questions about the current bhp and map!
