James,

Why is that ?

Balancer pipe lol.. Was a custom jobby not off the shelf

They dont know how to do them pmsl

hmmm other boxes, well they couldn't get the senders out without breaking them, and with the current m.o.t. laws thought I would say safe.

Sounds... well very deep roar pmsl couldn't keep it below 5k all they way home I love it :D

To "balance" the gases as they come out.

Don't know what them being custom made has to do with having them or not!? Mine have been custom made and they were put in.

I only have the back boxes and other than those its stright thru from the turbo's, less possible back pressure as poss! + that DOES sound good.

What does pmsl mean?

Don't know if Dave is being sarcastic there? I did my research into it and everyone I spoke to said you need them. Luke's at Z Centre have them as do SE's etc etc. I maybe wrong, its just what I found out.

No, not being sarcastic at all. It's one of the few debates on here which hasn't come up for a while ;). I was interested in what info you had received on it.

My strictly amateur brain can't come up with a particularly good reason for them although, as you say, a lot of places do them. However, one of the most popular exhausts (Mongoose) doesn't have them and people don't suffer noticeably.

Despite the many threads that have gone on about this subject, there has never been an truly authoritative post about it.

Just wondered if you'd heard something 'scientific'.

Dave

I must admit, what does it matter if one pipe blows more than the other? something drastic or nothing much? Someone must know!? I was told at the time but it was a long time ago and can't remember what was said. But I DO remember that from what I was told, I decided to have one in my "custom jobbie".

You need the balance pipe for pulse tuning apparently.

Something to do with using the negative pressure pulses in one bank to help to pull gasses from the other bank.

Dunno how much difference it makes on a V6, but when I was looking into it, it was supposed to be worth 30-40bhp on a 7.4 chevvy.

Then again, maybe not as important on turbo'd motors.

oooh no does this mean I have to junk my Mongoose and go back to stock?

John, I 'd be very interested to see any further tech info on the point you raise. If it's easily found, that is.

For what it's worth, the most credible info I came up with was that it would slightly improve power at part-open throttle. That would mean that the 'loss' could be offset by putting your foot down a bit more.

If it really is about affecting the 'suck' then it would be based on resonance created at various wave frequencies. This would mean that it could only have a beneficial effect at a specific rpm and throttle opening.

I've got a perverse interest in the dynamics of gas (partly due to my hobby which involves leaping off mountains and putting my life in the hands of the dynamics of gasses). Despite a fair bit of study, I still don't get this balancer pipe thing.

Any more views ?

From what I've read, and from my understanding of using the exhaust pulses to aid scavenging of the cylinders, an exhaust with no balance tube will probably have a tendency of shifting the powerband upward slightly in the rev range.

On another note - nice tailpipes, certainly different - and hey, isn't that what it's all about?

Nice back bumper too, quite like that.

Only other thing I notice - the exhaust is all slip-over joints, and most 'off the shelf' aftermarket exhausts (Mongoose etc) are all flange joints.

Probably of little consequence - so long as the exhaust clamps don't hang too low - there's sweet f.a. groundclearance on these things as it is :) (Well there is on mine.. grounds on a matchstick..)

Cant seem to get the link working properly. Would like to see your exhaust (ahem) but when I click on the link it just keeps going onto MSN homepage.

Or am I just being stupid:rolleyes:
