From what I cam make out they do the same thing right?

not too clued up in this particular area.

Have had (ahem) SE boost upgrade, but in-car boost controller better? Spoke to Jeff about JWT jets, etc, etc.

Bit of advice please.

ThankZ.

Well boost jets are little welding tips that will generate boost ect ect blah blah... they work and are fine, problem is they give alot of spike... ie your boost on a cold or damp day could peak above your set boost ie 14psi? so it can be dangerous and really is not worth it in my books, its a cheap alterantive and will work a treat, but you will be better of at the end of the day getting a controller.

You can do far far more things with a controller ie set up different boost levels, set a peak warning ect ect...

And this is just my opinion - but dont look to try make more power the cheap way, it wont pay of in the long run.

because if you cant afford a proper controller then what is going to happen when something does go wrong because of the power increase.

(again just an opinion, not based on anything derogitory ect)

Blimey, I'm going to agree with Warren - I'm going to print this thread out and frame it !

My take on it is that boost jets are fine as a cheap alternative but, because of the boost spikes which the others mention, you need to be more conservative. e.g. when I used them, I could boost up to 15 psi without problem but had boost jets to give me around 13.5 - 14 psi. This gave me the safety margin I needed as I would occasionally spike to 15 psi. If I'd had a proper electronic controller, I could have set it to 15 all the time.

Ok, another question if you don't mind (I've paid my £20 so y not)

Jeff has said £350 for upgraded ECU and JWT jets, whats the gain with an upgraded ECU? a BLITZ boost adjuster is about the same price. Does a controller just do what the jets do and the ECU a totally different thing? I know the ECU controls the fuel and air etc but I'm not going too mad with the mods so surely don't need it? has my "boost upgrade" already re-mapped the ecu?

the ECU should provide more fuel where needed to support the higher boost level you are achieving.

however, until you get to +14psi, then an upgraded ECU is not completely necessary, just a safeguard.

I have been running up to 1 bar boost for over 2 years now on stock ecu, with no detonation or problems.

I just make sure i know what octane i have put in and what the outside air temperature is when i put my foot down in fun

as long as you are aware of when you need to be careful

James

the jets/controller only ups the boost, the chip adjusts the fueling/timing etc to compensate for the higher boost you need both to do it properly/safely.

Contact ChrisC who has all of the different chips and has done loads of these. It is no secret rocket science to do just takes a steady hand with the soldering iron. You will save HUNDREDS of pounds believe me!!!

Right, so having had a boost upgrade, I should now go for a chip upgrade? oh dear, so where and when does a boost controller come in?

I should be working not looking on the forum, but who cares?

  • Author

So what I SHOULD have done was boost controller and chip upgrade? but having already had boost upgrade, whats best now? both still I suppose.

boost upgrade with stock ecu........slightly dodgy in some cases

boost upgrade with chipped ECU.........good

boost controller with chipped ECU.......better.

get a chip from chrisC, check with an aftermarket gauge to make sure you are getting 1 bar boost from your boost upgrade, if your not he has the jet sizes that you need, check your timing is 15 degrees (standard) as it may have been retarded during the boost upgrade.

Run this for a while and see what you think, when you have the spare cash then get yourself a controller which will give you loads of fancy features to play with like how harsh the boost comes in, setting different levels of boost for different driving conditions etc etc.

simple really ;)

Hello James,

Listen to Paul!! you could get the chip and controller for not much more than £350. That's the way I would certainly go!!!! My personal opinion is if your gonna mess around with the boost, do it the "safest" way possible.

Good luck.

Vijay

Hate to throw cold water on a boosted power upgrade but mind the insurance. If you do not tell them you might as well not send the premium cos you aint covered. Technically this even goes for the cheap and risky boost jets only fitting because it is a modification to increase performance.

I asked mine the other day for a quote. Extra cost about £250 for a performance chip so long as power increase is less than 20%.

Willie

James, I agree with the guys on here, boost controller and chip best way to go without a doubt, but

I have a JWT (def speak to ChrisC on here) chip and 1.0mm boost jets fitted and have fitted an aftermarket boost guage and I am running at ~13psi.

Now yes with a boost controller I could go to 15psi, but 13 is cool and if I do get spikes then I will be in the safety zone.

Good luck whatever, but shop wisely and save the £s.

Cheers

Martin

Cheers guys, once again you've come up with the answers that I needed.

I love you all.

Anyone know what Emero looks like?
