During TOTB I seemed to be struggling for power, with these symptoms do you think its fuel pump? could it be anything else?

Symptoms

Idle and reving while not in gear is ok, boosting in first and second seemed ok apart from a bit of back fire now and then but not overly noticeable. When in 3rd 4th and MAINLY 5th at high rpm and high boost the car just felt like it was hitting a limiter without being near the redline. Engine made a spluttering noise like miss firing while in 5th gear trying to get my top speed on the 1km. When I came back to the pit lane I noticed the fuel pump was whining a lot, I had not notice it do this before apart from when it primes itself.

Any ideas or what to do to diagnose it before I start searching forums and tech sites?

Cheers

could be fuel pump, you need to monitor your pressure to see if it's dropping. how much fuel did you have in the tank?

Could be a boost leak as well...

Tank was half full then down to quarter. Will do a boost leak test when I get chance to first.

Thanks

Could it be a bad FPCU or bad earth on fuel pump?

Anyone with Tech experience......

I am just throwing out idea's from things people tell me that goes wrong.........

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

My personal view is that it's a boost leak. I would suspect if the fuel pump were giving up and the fuel pressure dropping, a top speed run would have killed the engine from running so lean!

Quick update. I've done a boost leak test and 2 of the front pipes had a leak so I tightened the clamps and they are ok. Sounds like quite a big leak towards the back passenger side. Thought it was the iac valve until I removed the battery to try to see/hear better. Anyway it seems like it's a lot further down maybe near turbo, but not the main intake pipe. I can't for the life of me figure out where the leak is. I did notice which concerned me, when I knocked the dipstick looking around air is coming out of the dipstick pipe. Is this normal?

Will have a better look tomorrow when I have more time.

Air exiting the dipstick tube is expected during a boost leak test.

Ideally, you need to have AFRs monitored to find out exactly what is happening. Sounds like a boost leak as already suggested, chances are AFRs were dipping into the low 10s and causing a rich misfire in high gears due to the extra load the car doesn't experience in the lower gears.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Noel ill stick it on consult and see what that says. Do you think the AEM wideband gauge is appropriate to keep an eye on things? Which bank is best to monitor?

cheers

Your AEM wideband should be fine for a rough idea, but ideally you need to take datalogs. I personally monitor the driver's side bank, as this typically runs a tiny bit leaner than the passenger side. Try both to begin with, then monitor the leanest side.

Found the leak, seems like its the side of the turbo. I have drawn arrows on the pics but I think I made them too small. It seems to me that the leak is between the shell of the turbo and the compressor bit?

First pic air is bubbling out of behind the gold clamp. No leak where the actual silver housing is that you can see.

Same again leak from behind the gold clamp.

What do you guys reckon?

Also I have done some data logging on Conzult anyone offering to have a look at the data for me please?
