Got my Yellow Zed home today and a few issues - Help needed. (Gearbox, Wheel studs)

Hi All,

After a bit of advice on this................

Got my new Yellow Zed home today and there have been a few issues.

Firstly, the Automatic gearbox is holding first geart for a lot longer than it should and then shunts slightly into second. Not sure if its holding onto the other gears longer too, don't think so though and they all seem to change relatively smoothly.

Secondly,

On the way back there was a massive rattle appearing from the back and steadily getting worse. Managed to get it home, Parked it up and found that several of the studs had sheared off and the nuts were floating around. It's amazing that the wheel didn't just fall off.

Does anyone have any studs that i can buy off them or where i can get them? Are they easy enough to swap out? Is it easier to just replace the whole rear hubs, if so, anyone got any of them? The Zed is now my daily driver so i need to get it back on the road ASAP.

Any help appreciated.

Ps. The car has a dial cluster that appears to be from a TT? Has the turbo part on. Is there any way to see if this used to be a TT with an Engine swap or if it's just had the dials replaced?

Cheers

Peter

Common issue normally caused by the tps been incorrectly set.

Nissan main dealer, not expensive and better than used items.

There's a link somewhere on how to do the Auto box diagnostics. Have a search for it.

Firstly you need to find why the studs snapped. Are aftermarket wheels fitted? Do they have the correct size spigot rings fitted? If not, undue stress is caused on the studs and can shear them.

Here's a link on how to change them: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/300zx-how-to-replace-a-wheel-stud-and-install-wheel-spacers.html

As Jeff says, get them from Nissan.

Zed #2: 1998 Midnight Purple 2+2 NA. (owned 2020 - now)

Zed #1: 1995 Blue Slicktop NA (2013-2015)

You could see if the boost solenoid is there - near the small engine fuse box drivers side near the bulkhead ?

I would expect the cluster has been changed, you would be barmy to convert a TT to an NA, you would likely have all sorts of tale tales, a hicas solenoid for one, or the provisions for one, wiring and or hoses etc. Rad mounting position, oil cooler, brake disc thickness(not always) basically you soon start to find other things that made you think hrmmm.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

So the studs are easy enough to change then?

Yeah, it has aftermarket wheels but not had them off so unsure of spigots.

Ideally I'd like to do all the rear studs just in case so how much would this set me back from a Nissan main dealer? (10 studs)

So with the gearbox, if it's a common problem how easy is the repair?

Don't know if it makes a difference but looks like the car has been off the road for a few years.

Yeah studs arnt to bad. Just changed my front ones while doing the brakes. I briefly covered it in my brakes thread. Shouldn't be too hard.

Don't know much about the auto box but I know sometimes they have problems if the filter gets blocked or oil needs renewing.

Jeff said it was likely the TPS (throttle position sensor) this is located on the plenum. There's a how to on the subject, multimeter and a screwdriver type job.

Yeah I mean if that doesn't solve it.

Cheers guys. All good advice.

I'll get the Studs sorted first so it's drivable then tackle the Autobox issue.

Are the Studs for the TT and N/A the same?

other than that, car seems spot on.

I believe there is a difference between the front and back studs but not with TT and n/a. Give mike at mjp a ring he will get them sent to you and they will be the right ones.

Well before I read the post I bought a set of these off eBay. Wanted it done quick so hope they are the right ones. With me being at work it's gonna be a bit of a pain. Was off last week. Typical.

Just wanted to get the zed back roadworthy ASAP since it's now my daily driver.

Also bought a set of tuner nuts as I can't get my own wheel brace around the nuts in the wheel. Don't know what wheel brace was used before so just hope I can get the rest of them off.
