Flaptop Help...

OK...up till Monday, my flaptop has been working fine, despite having Windows ME loaded on it. Monday afternoon it had a hissy fit about memory, freezes and required rebooting. Since then, depite rebooting many more times and stuff, I can't get open windows to appear as shortcuts on the Taskbar, so have to cold-switch between applications.

It has 256mb of memory on version 4.90.3000 of Windows...

Any ideas as to what I need to do to get the shortcuts re-appearing, please?

Cheers

It's not just the task bar that need dragging up is it?

Not seen that problem before but you can use ALT+TAB to switch between programs in the meantime.

If you just press the two together it jumps to the last program you used.

If you hold ALT down and press TAB twice it will move back two programs etc.

But you probably already knew that...

shove your ME CD in and do a reload to re-apply any corrupted DLL's

Looks like something has corrupted. boot up in safe mode. And with windows ME you can go back to a save point. Only problem you migh loose what you have installed between save point and now. Use to happen to me loads with Windows ME. I've got a copy of windows 2000 Professional much more stable!.

Blonde though I may be, credit me with a smidge more intelligence, please. ;) ;)

Something has definitely corrupted somewhere...guess that I'm going to have to do some more faffing about with it and threatening it with becoming a toaster tonight... :)

Cheers for the replies!

Well, tried the Safe Restore option, going back to last Friday when it definitely worked...and still the open window icons don't appear on the taskbar... Came up saying that No Changes had been Made....

I'll try a re-load of the .dlls when I go home as my Windows ME CD is there.....

Not sure it is a .dll problem, to be honest....but I'll try it.

Any other options / suggestions?

For info....

I removed ShellIconCache and re-booted and now all is working again, so it must have been corrupted. :)

Cheers!

Scratch that...it appears to be an issue with the "Default" User, so obviously the registry is corrupt somewhere.

If you log off "Default" and enter Windows, it's ok...

Anyone know the Registry inside out and what I need to look for?

No worries - I spent 7 years in 2nd line support as well - I know full well than to trust ANY user who says "Oh yes, I've already re-booted it"

Suuuuure you have...have you danced the fandango around your desk wearing a doughnut and a tutu?

"Oh yes...FIRST thing I tried..."

uh-huh....do it again, while I'm on the phone.... ;)

As for pictures, no...don't like my fizog being plastered all over an internet BBS, so there aren't any. :D

(Well, technically there ARE, but I'm hoping that those what 'av a photo of me, loike, have the decency not to post it. :D)
