well guys today while fettling wires under my dash i noticed that the steering column isn't attached to the plate that's bolted to the firewall so i can see light from outside in the engine bay, this strikes me as odd as i have no idea how it could've happened as the top is mounted correctly... only thing i have thought up is maybe it was replaced at one time with a swb one?? not sure if they are different though IMG_20140604_220713674[1].jpg

thanks

anyone know the answer to this as iv one in my workshop for bodywork repairs and the owner wants me to try and fix this problem?

What series is it ?

if it's a series 3/4 then the support bars bolts are higher up.

could be the steering column been replaced by an older series hence it's further up as you say.

not sure about a shorty being shorter as say but I do know the bolt holes on my series 4 are closer

to the drivers sitting position compared to older ones.

Nothing is Broke ....... subframe has been dropped at some point with the steering rod attached .. all you need to do is

tap/knock the sliding collar down back in to the hole .. and ya done

funny that i just fixed a Z last week with the same problem

PS the Collar slides up and down .. its for when u Crash and happen to Hit the steering wheel it will move in by 8>10"

bit of body protection

After my interior rebuild today I had this exact problem, but mine was caused by the steering column

just been generally free from the top mound for the last six months.

After all the time its worked its way loose and the spline moved up by an inch.

After loosing the bolts we finally got it back in place but it took two of us to move the damn thing.
