Not 4 wheel steering as such, but Super HICAS, which turns the rear wheels a very small amount.

It is standard on all Twin turbo models, but Naturally aspirated models are not equipped with it. There are 2 versions, hydraulic and electronic. I think its 1996 and onwards models which have electronic HICAS. Anyway, almost all zeds have hydraulic HICAS, in which case the gadget thingy is just behind the drivers headlamp, long thin metal thing.

well that is 4ws clarkey, all 4 wheels steer! there is a rear steering rack, albeit one that only moves the wheels a small amount.

Paul C is right - but I can see how Clarkey might think it's different from other 4WS - like the ones which help old ladies park.

Anyhow, only really wanted to post to commend Clarkey on the avatar. Lest we forget, and all that...

Yeah it's a shame the old lady parking option is not something we have. It would be nice as when you are going to these meetings you always take a wrong turn and have to do a U turn, not a problem for most people driving normal cars but for us in our Zed's it becomes a three point turn because the steering arch's on Zed's are so dam small.

I can see Clarkey's point here. 4 wheel steer is different to the HICAS. Trucks and some cars have the 4 Wheel Steering. I know the saloon Mitsubishi Galant 4WD Turbo has it. It is turn wheel and the back turn the opposite way a little.

The HICAS takes into account the speed you are traveling and either turns the same way, opposite way or doesnt move which standard 4WS doesnt.

Hi, A couple of bits to add to the above.

See these 2 links about HICAS on a 300ZX:

http://www.300zx.co.uk/rides/geoff/hicas2.jpg

My import is a 1994 ('95 series 3 model 2+0 TT) and has the electric HICAS, but it may well be that the UK spec (& other versions) did not have this feature until a later date?

HICAS was an optional extra on the N/A, so there are a few about with it fitted.

It can be eliminated, and Stillen has the part for a hydraulic locking system, and apparently you just need to take the fuse out on an electric version?

If you search back, there are quite a few differing views about HICAS, but if kept, the important thing is to keep an eye on any wear in the "steering" mechanism.
