Hi,

I have just sent the zx in for a full service and check suspension - I had a call today saying that the is a feint knock at bottom end and they recommend re-build. Can the big ends be done with engine in or has it to come out - I suppose if it needs to come out then perhaps its time to have other work done - at the moment I have moderate upgrades - divorced downpipes - full stainless system - apexi air induction and ecu upgrade from zedworld several years ago- - have uprated clutch as well. Ideally I would love to be able to get more bHP without stressing the engine but not chasing mad power so I suppose 400-450 BHp max- I was toying with bigger turbos and bigger injectors and a re-map - what else would I need - and anyone have ideas of best places for parts - do I need side mount intercoolers and I suppose better brakes - what BHP with the stock engine mange without changing pistons etc - any help would be much appreciated - the garage say that the turbos are running at max and air etc the same - the garage has rolling road and it has currently 340BHP

regards

I've got similar mods on mine, and after a talk with Noz he may of mentioned figures similar to what your after with just a remap.

I was going to get mine done as soon as I've sorted my possible boost leak.

I'd get a second opinion on the faint knock, sounds a bit ominous. If that was the case I would then take it to a z32 specialist.

Going forward, hiking power up has a few things to consider. Any fault will show faster the more power you produce, the most noticeable first issue is either blowing up number 6 due to a poor tune or failed components, the clutch doesn't last too long over 350bhp esobif it's old anyway.

The bottom end has been used stock to produce over 800hp but generally the guide is 500 for a sense of longevity(bear in mind what I already said though about faults). Getting to those figures is the interesting bit. ~400 is achieved pretty easy with a custom map, and with breather mods 500 has been hit on stock tubs and injectors in the states. My preference would be ditch the old worn stock turbos to achieve this though, the costing of the breather mods isn't cheap.

So basically you need to decide what you want and how you want to achieve it.

hi, thanks steve the reply that sounds were I would like to be.

z32 - so strange you ay that as I lay in bed last night and things did not add up - I had loads done at zedworld including 60000 mile service - new uprated clutch etc about 3000 miles ago - it only went it to this local garage (they are old school and do work on race and rally prepping older cars) as the zed was crabbing a bit and a full service - they said last night - we have not started to work on your car yet - but have noticed when moving it in and out of the garage that there was a feint knock and low oil pressure - I had put the oil pressure down to a crappy sensor as it was changed a while ago and was ok for a bit then went intermittent - I know the clutch makes a noise (like release bearing) when reversing - but mentioned this and the guy said yeah we noticed this and that's because the clutch is worn down to the rivets - so long story short - thuink will pick it up and walk away - car runs well - very powerful - no obvious noises and never lets me down - this is my money pit unfortunately and have spend about £8000 in the last few years on new leather - colour change service work and others so it wont be something I don't do

I do want to go down the upgrade route and would love to know more - I would like to keep stock internals if possible but think perhaps have new wear and tear items such as rings and big ends etc when the time is right = what air mods are best to go for and am I right in saying that if the engine was out and internals renewed - would it be better/more airflow larger turbos and injectors and that would be safe to 500 bhp and a custom remap- not interested in too much more - also would need to think about larger brakes and suspension set up - million dollar question though -who can I trust for genuine help and advise in the south west - zedworld are excellent but just too far away - I know the remap can be done by noz - unfortunately I have found garages locally not to be trusted (unless that's just me) - don't mind some travel obviously -

very much appreciate the response

that's cool - will contact them and go from there

many thanks

Jimmer isn't a million miles from you up in avon mouth, nr. Bristol. Pretty much every big power z32 in this country has passed through his hands at some point.

These cars do sound pretty rattly from cold, esp with higher Mileage. Just pick up walk away and take it to some one who knows these cars well, 99% of garages do a poor job with the z32 due to it's quirks and confined spaces.

On the upgrade route, you've got to be sure what you have is solid. Building on poor foundations lands your house at the bottom of the hill, I'd you see what I'm saying.

From experience I wouldn't bother putting the stock turbos back on if I was doing it again. The financial implications of rebuilding the stockers vs replacement it's simply not worth thinking about.

Once your 120k kit is done properly you will hopefully have a good base.

I recommend joining to read http://www.300zxclub.com as there are far more modified z32s over there and you will get a feel for what mods do what, what characteristics you want etc.

Unless you've got faulty turbos, they're telling you porkies or they simply haven't a clue. Stock turbos can take a lot of boost and make good power, but you need to maximise engine efficiency to make the most of them as far as top end power (i.e. BHP) is concerned. I've mapped a car to 500bhp on manual turbos, and my own car was at 456bhp with smaller auto turbos before the 2.5" FMIC pipework.

Give Jimmer at PowerZed a call first & foremost :)

got the zed back yesterday - sad thing is they have given me an invoice to say that the bottom end big ends etc is goosed and is confirmed by absolutely no oil pressure - mechanic confirmed that it only knocks when first started for the first 2-3 seconds then is ok - (sounds like you were spot on z32bolt) - I have planned now to service it myself on Thursday - just checked oil level and reading hardly any on dip stick - topped up now I have oil pressure again - I know I am a dumbass for not checking oil but kind of thought they may have checked a few basics before writing the engine off - noz - many thanks for that - I had emailed you off the forum about bringing it to you for some tuning - I have auto tubs on there - I think I will talk to jimmer if he is about and get his opinion - if all is good then have it well serviced and then to noz for a new map etc - don't mind noz if you think I would benefit from some better airflow in before it comes to you

many thanks all the replies - all very positive (I hope)
