So, I have removed the knckered gear knob as far as I can. The leather and plastic underneath it came off easy. Still cannot get remaining metal part off.

I have heated it up, twisted it in both directions until it starts to twist the actual stem, stared at it (willing it to come off) and it still will not budge.

My only thought is that it has been threadlocked or superglued on.

Any ideas? I have been through old threads on here and tried everything bar replacing the stem.

If I were you mate I'd break out the dremel with cutting disc and cut the dam thing off.

Why people put these things on with high strenth locktite i dont know....very mild removable threadlock would be ideal and you would,nt need to use a Sthil saw to get them off:crying:

Does anyone know what type of metal it is made from?

A dremel/cutting saw could be a good idea..but I may prefer to replace with a short shifter kit - is this perhaps a simpler job going forward?

 

The car is an import so who knows what it is bonded with! What started out as a simple job has turned into a mare! Ahh...this is what owning a Zed is like isn't it?!

I would guess aluminium. Don't fit a short shiter you will want it off pretty quick lol. It will be Ali or steel, magnet time. If you lift up centre console bit you can access the gear stick itself. Bit fiddly though.

The threaded part of the gear knob is steel. A mate of mine had the same trouble it to turned out ot have been thread locked on. He was doing a gear box swap so the stick was removed anyway, so it was vice & stilsons time. When you do get it off and you come to fit your new one if it wont tighten up in the right place use PTFE tape it worked for me.

It's fiddly but very doable and it would allow you to get it on a bench and get the old one off. You need to remove the centre consol and the inner grommets and housing to get access. Then it's just a case of undoing a pinion bolt at the bottom of gear stick.

Sounds simple. One of the next jobs then!

If you cut the gear gaitor off then you can remove the centre consol, make life much easier.

take the gear gator off so you can see the allen keys to undo first then u can pull it hard, pull hard enough shell come eventally lol
