I tried to test the timing on my Z today and cannot see the timing mark on the pulley...... painted it white and on the timing marks....

Started her up, timing gun set to 15 degrees and there is NO mark visible on the top or sides of the pulley..... I can't see the mark anywhere?

I had loosened off the CAS to adjust it and now have sod all acceleration...... bloody nightmare....

Starting to think the timing gun is faulty...... I did have to do a bit of moving the 'pick up' to get any strobing at all......

It almost looks like the timing is 180 degrees out, but couldn't be that as engine runs and ticks over nicely......

CAS swapped for a spare one and no sign of the timing mark even with strobe set to 70 degree's.......

Worried now I may have forgotten to refit keyway on crank pulley and it has rotated 90 degree when i did up bolt refitting it?.......... can't think of anything else.....

Timing light I have won't even read...... so going to take her to garage with snap on digital light again in a while.....

Right, turned over by hand to get bottom pulley TDC mark on 0 degree cover mark and put rod down onto top of no1 piston and it is NOT at TDC.....

Turned crank by hand and TDC leaves the timing mark on bottom pulley about 90 degree to the right.......

Timing belt??????????

So much for going away today....

You don't time it up using the 0 mark ect take the bottom pulley off there a little notch on the bottom timing belt sproket you need to line that up with the notch on the oil pump that's TDC

The 0 5 10 15 mark ect is to set the ignition timing

That is what I was doing...... lol

Just checking to see where TDC is as ignition timing is 91 degree out according to 2 timing lights.....

On a car if u had the belt/cam 180 out u could spin the leads round and it would run right lol...

Are u using the loop on the ptu, or no1 coil

  • Author

Hi Terry and 111mattin111, The timing light pick up is sitting on top of no1 coil pack as per Jeff TT thread with the pick up cable tied open....... tried wires to coil pack and got nothing....

PTU relocated next to air filter so wire not accessible now.......

What is the problem with the car, if u turn it left so the bolt is almost fully to the right of the slot, does it run ok anywhere around there,

If not then maybe its time to check the belt timing...

Cause if everything is ok it should run pretty well anywhere around there, obviously it will need to be right.

Didn't some zeds have a problem where the cas went in the cam throwing timing all over the place,

Thanks Terry, The car runs okay, drives okay, but stalls when coming off accelerator some times........

I was just trying to check the Ignition timing was 15 degree as I never checked when putting her back together...... also did TPS the other day......

Just couldn't figure out why timing marks were not visible with any timing light.....untill a friend used the digital snap on one and got to 91 degree before the pulley lined up with the cover mark......

So I'm now worried that the timing belt is way off........

Other than that she goes well, doesn't overheat and boost's okay.......

Just don't want to drive to Norwich and destroy the engine if the timing belt isn't right......

If its stalls have u checked for boost leaks, the tps I found I had to set it to 0.45 then open the throttle and let it snap shut hard and make sure it still goes to 0.45 cause when I first did it id set it then snap it shut and it would change.

If it runs ok u sure its not your timing light, if belt was out im sure you would need to fully turn it left to get it to run ok...

It's weird Terry, the engine sounds okay where ever I set the CAS to...... either way it only seems to effect the tick over...... tried 2 CAS units and same on both, so must be the timing belt throwing it out 90 degree......

Not sure if I should risk driving to Norwich like this though...... but then need to explain to the wife why we can't go on our anniversary / honeymoon........:hang::death:.........lol

You sure its not your light mate,

If it was me and it was running fine I'd put the cas in the center and drive it easy...

Pretty much what I have been doing for past few days.......lol...... Just seems to me that if it was that far out with an interference engine something would had connected by now........

Weird how 2 different timing lights are doing the same thing though.......

How will fuel economy be with ignition timing that far out??????

Well after lots of deliberation...... and threats of divorce or castration......... We are taking the Z to Norwich ..........

As my Saab has developed the following faults.......... No ABS, No working air bags, No Traction control, Blue Smoke and NO working speedo........ ABS ECU has failed!!!

So the Z seems to be okay touch wood, so cautious drive there.......... and I have RAC in case.......

Wish me luck and if anyone from Norwich is about this weekend ?........ then send me a message and I will check them...... If / When I get there...... lol

Hope all goes well Russ.

Have a great anniversary, hopefully the good weather will hold also.

Maybe worth putting a temporary mark on the pully when no' 1 is at TDC and re checking.

At least you will have peace of mind that you are not too far out?
