I will be buying a 300zx very soon but I have a question, I have been told to stay away from manual zx's as they eat gearboxes on a regular basis, then I was told that the auto's do and the manuals don't.

Which is the best one to go for.

Any help on this would be gratefull as I have a choice of two car's one manual and one auto, they are both very clean so I don't want to miss out

Thanks

Manuals eat gearboxes??? WTF??? Nah its the autos that have a good munch on themselves. They are fine at stock power but as soon as you go higher you start to get problems....

CheerZ,

Just drive both and see for yourself. Each has merits and demerits. Both are great cars!

If both are good uns then you have a perfect opportunity.

Search the archives for more info - this is well documented

To be honest, you will get a 50 / 50 split with that question and probably cause a fight at the same time. The Auto v Manual war has been going on longer in this forum than the question which came first, the chicken or the egg ?

Well it you have problems with a manul it will be the clutch, it you have problems with an auto it will be the entire trans.

Clutch is cheaper.

I have driven an auto for almost 10 years now. I recently switched over to a manual.

Auto's are good in the traffic but you can't beat a manual around the country lanes. IMO :D

Also I'd go for a silver colour if you can :D .

agree with you on the gearbox choice stu, but you know blue is the best colour.

Oh yeah, blue sure is nice,

But for that air of sophisitication and class it's grey all the way!!!!!:D :D

Fine politician in my opinion Mr Duffer ..... the like of which has not been seen since :D :D :D

Besides, we all know he's a sex god now, just ask Edwina:p LOL!

Actually auto's do have an unpleasantly high failure rate unless you get a decent external oil cooler fitted - and one that doesn't get blocked !

Manuals also have their share of problems, typically with the syncho on 4th gear and clutches wear out, but they're service parts so you live with that.

The real difference between a manual and an auto failure is that when the auto goes it gets taken to the repair place on a truck. When the manual goes it just graunches a bit and you have a while to find a decent repair place before major damage is done.

On the subject of colours :-

  • Red - very 70's
  • White - very 80's (and always dirty)
  • Grey - just fade into the background
  • Black - see above
  • Yellow - for extroverts and attention seekers only
  • Silver - timeless and anonymous but currently in fashion (see all Mercs, BMW's etc)
  • Blue - perfect, as good as it gets, beautiful and sophisticated

:D

Red = Sports Car

Blue= Matches the smoke coming out of your exhausts! Only on manuals of course! IMHO

Thankyou to everybody for their help and advice on the auto or manual question,

I am sure that there will be several more questions in the future, I just can't wait to get my new car now that I have made up my mind which one to go for.

red = matches the oil pissing out of your gearbox (only on auto's of course!) :p

Silver all the way!!!!!

But alass im a red man at heart, time for a respray!!!!

hey i,m getting scared as shit .. i have an auto..

for my sake i hope auto is better. no problems so far..

Hey darkman2 - if you've got an auto on Montserrat, I'd seriously think about getting the extra cooler. IIRC a J spec Z has a smaller cooler for the autobox than UK spec. And Montserrat is hotter than UK!

I found a link to this on AndyP's site http://www.300zx.org.uk - it was by aaronjb I think:

http://www.mind-design.co.uk/atf_cooler.htm

Andy (or anyone) - is this still the best way to get an extra cooler for the autobox or am I confused as usual

(edited cos the link got messed up - twice :( oops )

Hey, all that good work belongs to Az !

It's certainly a good way to go, not 100% on the actual size/shape of the cooler, I know that his was taller than some that people fit, so he may have some thoughts on which option is best.

It certainly does keep the box cooler doing it that way, and it doesn't seem to have had any impact on the cooling efficiency of the car (my temp guage sits at about 65-75C in this weather), but...

If I was doing it again I'd get a 10 or 13 row oil cooler and mount it next to the stock engine oil cooler, rather than where I mounted it (on the back of the rad). Actually with my mesh air filter in place, my 19 row one would probably fit, it just used to foul on the stock airbox.

I'd make it smaller for two reasons;

One - The ATF cooler will work more efficiently,

Two - It won't impede airflow through the rad (on hot 30C days, in traffic jams, it was getting up to 95C water temp)

Three (er, I said two reasons, didn't I) - Using the Pacet fan retainers to attach the oil cooler to the rad actually slightly punctured the bottom row on the oil cooler - not handy, although it only weeps at the moment. An oil cooler with wider fins would fit better like that admittedly.

Four - My fan shroud doesn't fit on now because of the oil cooler lines.

So in short - fit it where SE fit it, next to the stock engine oil cooler, on a metal bracket, and use a 10 or 13 row by 235mm oil cooler.

Anything bigger (unless you're on a race track) is overkill IMHO, and also doesn't fit unless you have an aftermarket air filter and have removed the splashguard :)

Essay over ;)

HTH

seems a atf cooler will help me. but funds a bit low

did my 60k maint and just bought a new radiator

anyway in montserrat we have no traffic jams ,

and theres always a breeze blowing.

ha ha

just trying to convince myself..

Red - a great colour for a girls pants ('cos you'll know she does) but Rubbish for a car!

White - we like white, especially cotton.

Grey - dull dull du... Zzz Zzz

Black - as has been recently established, Black is a girls colour and should only be used for little dresses

Yellow - the colour of dried urine

Silver - Marvellous, Magnificent, Mighty!

Blue - gay gay gay gay, oh by the way have I mentioned its gay, its a bit of a gay colour, no, hang on - its alot of gay colour.

:D

P.S. thats where the phrase "its a gay day" came from, its signifies a bright blue sky (and a gay one at that)

P.P.S none of this has been suggested by Herman, oh no guv, he's innocent, honest mate.

Nice one Massive! :D

P1ssing myself this end of the information super highway. :D

Clutches cheap? Not when you put on an aftermarket air filter and zorst and watch them go pop every 1000 miles FFS.

Manuals crunch through the queers aswell, Andy you know all about that one bud. P I mean! Not Muffman Hoffman. ;)
