Ok nothing to new or radical here but I often see mentioned speedo dry joint issues talked about and thought whilst actually tackling the very same issue I would take a few pics to help anyone else doing the same.

 

Not "a how to" by any means so the picture`s start with the cluster already removed and the speedo head separated and showing the back face of the pcb, as you can see the problem is not obvious to spot due to how small the joints are and pcb layout is.

 

 

 

So out come my trusty geek glasses, now don`t laugh these things might look goofy but boy do they come in their own on jobs like this.

 

 

Bought from ebay for around a fiver they have been used so many times to find problems on circuit boards that you would simply not find without they have paid for themselves many times over.

 

 

So with the aid of the bionic specs I was soon able to distinquish the dry joint, a little wiggle on the chip leg confirmed it was loose.

 

 

 

 

The space was a bit tight so I files down the tip on my soldering iron down to a needle like end and pre-loaded a dab of solder on it and then warmed the dry joint and second later a new flowed joint.

 

Simple fix restored the speedo from been intermittent and if done yourself a no cost repair, well expect for the goofy glasses of course!!

Yes small, very small, taking the pics were hard my decent spec Olypus digit camera was on max close up and still took around 10 pics and chose the best one`s.
