I've been smoking now for nearly 18 years, why I started I will never know!

I've been thinking about giving up for years but lack of will power has always stopped me trying.

The time has now come for me to actually give it a go!

I signed up to a quitting program with boots yesterday to start today.

I didn't expect it to be easy but f**k me do I want a fag so badly already!

My other half has also signed up to the program but she isn't going to start till tuesday (don't ask me why).

She keeps sneaking out for fags today thinking I won't notice but as soon as she comes back indoors, its all I can smell!!!

I know success is all down to will power so I am going to persevere but its so much harder already than I thought!

Anyone got any tips for me to keep me on the right track?

Swap from smoking to vaping. Then reduce the nicotine strength. Use the fruit flavours rather than the tobacco ones

Took me a couple of goes but eventually worked out. Give yourself a good long hard stare in the mirror and decide if you want to be in control of what you do or if you want cigarettes to be in charge. Once you've made that decision, everything else is just props to help you stick to it. I used gum and the inhalers (pre-vaping). Gum helps with the "doing things with your hands" habit as well as the nicotine.

Major benefit is you don't have to clean your car windscreen nearly as often! Good luck.

I really do want to give up! I'm just on the patches at the moment but I have been chewing gum (not nicotine gum) all day until it turns to paste  and that has helped a little.

What isn't helping at the moment (as I already mentioned) is the missus keep coming in smelling like fags!

Mate, I smoked for about 30 years.tried patches etc,now using a vapouriser.

I couldn't warrant spending on average £6.00 on a packet of fags!!

I've just done a 2 week course of champix a stop smoking drug but smoked all the way through it and didn't set a giving up date so all in all I failed .might try it again need more will power .

I know people who have used champix and they said it made them really sick every time they tried smoking, only reason I'm not on them yet is cause I thought I'd try giving up without the aid of pills first.

A mate of mine got an app to quit. He put in how many he smoked a day and it starts ticking up money you have saved. Seemed to help him. He saved like, 700 quid and bought a mountain bike then he was sorted.

To be honest, its not the money side of things that bother me as we usually buy a bulk load of baccie at a time for half price.

For me its more the coughing up shit all the time, getting out of breathe easily and stinking like an ash tray.

I'll just take each day as it comes and try my hardest to withstand the urge!

I gave up in may last year, smoked for 15yrs I didn't use anything just quit.

You will pass one habit for another, 1st day was hard after that its pretty easy.

I've had a couple of times where I've had a drink and been pretty drunk and smoked.

But dont smoke the following day, so if its a family party say new year may have a sneaky one with all the smokers lol but can get up in the morning and not even think about smoking or want one.

My boss smokes and it does not make me want to.

I got cessation nation app on my phone its quite good,

Tells u how much u have recovered,

How many days u have give up,

How many fags not smoked and how much money saved.

And how much longer u might live lol...

Only problem I've had since quitting is in school I had asthma, when I was 15 the asthma went, never used an inhaler since, 15 was about when I started smoking,

Quit smoking within few months asthma has come back and use an inhaler quite often.

but the times I've had a drink and smoke dont need inhaler for few days so its like the smoke numbs my lungs for a bit.

Had a look on the net they reckon fags have some kind of bronchial dilator in them similar to inhaler to disguise breathing difficulties and open your airways to get that rush.

But asthma aint really a problem, can treat it, but symptoms of lumg disease may be not treatable,

was pretty easy to give up, just count 1 day 2 days then weeks then you'll forget all about it...

i wouldnt use anything cause you'll still be addicted to something just give up and suffer for a day or two,

and goodluck...

biggest mistake in my life was starting smoking and the second biggest mistake was starting for a second time after an 8month lay off, luuckily champix came to the rescue for a second time and its now being nearly 2years since i ditched the horrible things

Never smoked myself; so never had to give up - hence I have no idea just how hard it could be....

...But all I will say, is good on you for taking the steps to give up. Stick at it mate - maintain your willpower and do not give in to temptation. You should certainly be healthier - and will definitely be wealthier; so good luck buddy!!

Thanks for all the support so far guys n girls.

I must admit, today has been a lot easier for me than yesterday! With any luck as each day goes past it will get easier and easier

I have been off them for almost 1.5 years now. I had read somewhere that the nicotene is out your system after 8-10hrs, so went to bed real early and when i woke up told myself that the 'want' for a smoke was just habit! Seems to have worked, though still have days were i could have one. Not the easiest thing to do but worth it in the long run.

Thanks for all the support so far guys n girls.

Hi Tom, Nice to see someone else doing this..... I stopped on 20th Jan after being rushed into Broomfield hospital for emergency surgery......

Not had one since coming out last thursday...... It's amazing after spending time next to 2 really nice guys with throat cancer, Just how you realise you don't want to end up like them....

I watched one guy have a Laryngectomy and wouldn't want this for anyone..... He made me promise to give up and now I want to do it for my kids and everyone who loves me.....

Good on you Tomo..... I'm with you on this......

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!
