Hi guys, the engine wiring loom on my 300 is proper shafted (the ecu loom part), after trying 3 looms, which was probably due to removing them from previous engines and un settling them. As you can understand probably i am having no luck on getting my car started again i have decided to make a fresh loom from near enough scratch baring using the old connectors??

Firstly i aren't bothered about the wires being colour coding as its not coming off again if i can help it.... just to clarify that!!

What gauge wires would i need to use?

is there more than one size of wire on the loom?

have any of you guys got any advice?

thanks Paul but i need to get this sorted asap with in the next 2 weeks preferably :-/

New loom from nissan if they still make them would be best and maybe quickest?? Failing that id get an auto sparky involved a few crossed wires could leave you in a right old pickle!!

I'm pretty sure there will be a few different gauges. What your doing sounds like a massive task and you would have to get it right first time. Are you sure the harness is the problem after 3 failures?

A simple thing like overtightening the big blue connector block on the ecu can cause a host of problems including not starting , but if you,ve tried 3 different looms are you sure it,s not the ecu itself ?

I can fully understand the reasons for not wanting to have to worry about colour coding the wires but I would strongly recommend that you at least do something that will enable you to identify the wires in the future. You could use model paint at each end of the wire for future reference and knowing these cars, you may need to diagnose one of those electrical gremlins one day and won't know where to start.

Just my opinion mate, but if you are going through the expense of buying the replacement wire and the time to make a new loom, you will absolutely kick yourself in the future if something goes wrong. Mark them up matey.

sorry guys i'm probably not being that clear am i lol. The wires will be getting marked so in time i could find out that they are i'll just be using the same wire thats all. It may sound selfish but once the looms on and in another 20 odd years the car will either be worth scrapping or have a new owner that will be made aware of it anyway.

As of today i have got an auto electrician on the job so at least i know it will be done to scratch, well to the best as what i can do in the time with what money i can spare at the moment. Having to clean the old plugs/connections and the ones that can be accessed and have new inner connections placed in that will be getting done. Well they will have to do until i can get some new ones and get them on in time :-)

have tried another ecu in it and that didnt work either so cant be that :-/All these looms are that old and brittle that they will work on the cars as they have settles in a place and then when they get taken off the wires must snap internally. So thought so it this is my only real option for a quick fix

to be fare i think its mostly the connectors that are shafted so they are getting dipped in cider vinegar to be cleaned up and sorted out, but like you say it maybe worth tracking the nackered wires and replacing them. We'll see what this guy says thats re doing the loom and see what he suggests

Yeah (as an electrician), I would say pick the best looking loom and check continuity through each wire and replace as necessary. Give it all a good shake and bend first to be sure any dodgy ones are well and truly broken so you find them.
