check the heater matrix behind the glovebox.

be carefull if your leaking water as the air blockage in the cooling system can quickly overheat the engine.

:-( ohhhh 2 weeks i own this car and already problem ..with my old celica for 2 yrs i didnt have any problems and she had twice milage than zed .engine temperature in zed was good but i will be careful , is it diy job or i have to go to the garage ? thx for help .

Hi,

The by-pass is a DIY job and easy (well relatively compered to some of the jobs for the Zed).

we are talking about 16 - 24 year old cars so owning one is not for the faint hearted .. if you are lucky it's a labour of love and if you're very lucky you only use it for fun.

so the heater matrix can be replaced without taking the dash out but not an easy job (really need the clutch pedal & seat out) , if you take the dash out its better but that makes it a much bigger job.

with dash in..

the matrix for the Zed is expensive but you can use one form another Nissan.. I cant remember what one but a search should find it for you.

and I think they sell them ere:

or maybe ebay..

good luck..

looks like (from doing a search) it's the:

Nissan Primera

or

Mitsubishi Lancer Cc- Ce 93'- 04'

but that is more expensive...

you are going to have to dig deep to keep a 300zx in good working order cheap car to buy can get very expensive to run and if you are going to uprate the car well the skys the limit so get used to getting the debt card out

Nissan PRIMERA P10 matrix will fit and is the cheapest new option and fits with no issues, although some have found the tanks a little wider ( few mm) so a tight fit possibly, but on mine i had no issues in sliding it in.

The biggest pain in the ass is access to it and you will be on your back in an awkward position, but if you are handy with he spanners very doable. I found cutting the pipes with a bosch multi tool and using some hose to re connect pipes was the easier option to getting the 8mm nut off the matrix pipe at the bulkhead behind the engine.

I have done it once :) and that's how your car will look like :)

You did all that cos you dropped 20p down a vent.....c'mon admit it :headvswal.

Seriously guys this must be one of the most talked about jobs on a zed over the past 10 years and why anyone would take the dash out is a complete mystery, have done scores of these over the years and mostly whilst the owner waits in reception.

Usual target time for matrix removal in an auto is around 35 mins, a manual takes a little longer at 55 mins, either should be all done and buttoned up in 2 hours, we used the genuine Nissan matrix for many years as they come complete with new copper pipes, operating valve, inner foam insulator and new outer rubber grommet. At that time the Nissan versus non Nissan matrix was a no brainer, however as Nissan UK continued to raise the price the genuine matrix price has become plain silly and now the non genuine matrix is much more economical.

Be aware though the non Nissan matrix is NOT as well constructed as the genuine one and does not include the new valve and pipes etc. only time that will will tell on how long they last but at £220 fitted its not like its a big number job as the genuine parts is more than that on its own.

hey, as usual Jeff you input is greatly appreciated.

not sure if you've done a guide on this job (i couldn't find one)...

Sure I did a write up a few years ago?? will see if I can find it, the correct matrix is silver in colour the incorrect ones are black, they are both Primara ones its the earlier one that is correct.

Good good. We should still have a jeff's tech thread bit. I've seen a couple that I don't the have gone in to the FAQ's bit, like in answer to questions and stuff, or just random ones that he kindly puts up every now and again.

You could do the bypass to get you there, a length of hose to join the two pipes at the rear of the engine

Yes thats right, might be worth linking out as groover mentioned, check to see how bad the leak is by monitoring the water level at the rad cap and how wet the carpet is by the front of the transmission tunnel.
