Mmm anyone actually done turbo`s removal without removing the engine?? need some definative answer as removing the engine although a straight forward job kinda like open`s a can worms with brittle loom issue`s etc after refitting.:confused:

 

Anyone got thought`s on it ???

Hmmmm so if you do it without taking the engine out, you wont know if anything needs replacing ect? considering the job cost roughly the same to do man hour wise?

Pull the engine everytime.

Then at least you get a chance to see and have a good look.

If the engine loom is brittle ect then surly it needs replacing?

Those are cans of worms you tend to open when you dont fix or maintain things properly.

 

Engine out you can get to det sensor very easily, you can check if the manifolds have any problems, you can get to all the main gaskets and see if they are up to the job, you can check all the wiring, remove the aiv ect ect ...

Jeff, Ian from Hiteq does em with the engine in all the time, still takes around the same amount of time though he reckons, customer of mine from this forum was telling me this week he did his own turbo swap with engine in, forget his name now so hopefully he'll see this and respond.

To do the job properly the engine should be taken out. As Warren says this has the added bonus of being able to inspect normally hidden compnents etc. The biggest problem with fitting turbos with the engine still in the car is when you come to refit them. If you can't get to a bolt properly, you can't torque it correctly, or even check its security. All it takes is one slightly loose bolt and you'll be saying hi to that customer again VERY soon - they may not even get out of the door before you're doing the job again.... Of course people HAVE done the job with the engine in. Look at it another way - if the turbos are fitted with the engine in the car, and there is a fault, with the time taken to rectify the fault you have now taken longer on the job than removing the engine in the first place... ;) Oh and I certainly wouldn't like to fit the oil lines with the tubs on the car - horrifying thought....

Oh and I can concur on the turbo oil feed pipe Andy, changed one on a customers car (drivers side) I spent like 3 hours across the engine with my brother underneath the car and the pair of trying to manipulate the dam thing into place by our finger tips!! never again.

got my turbo's done with the engine in at a main dealer and the hastle i got afterwards was'nt worth it as andyduff says about the bolt!! there were bolts loose allover and the engine is now fubar! take it out and give it some proper TLC!!!

Depends on who is doing the work I suppose, I've met Ian from Hiteq and he seems like a great bloke so not gonna start on about how IT can't be done!
