I have been lucky enough to get my hands on some Illuminated sills.

Unfortunately they're not in the greatest of conditions, So I was hoping to try and clean them up a bit. If anybody has done this before, any help would be greatly appreciated.

With them been aluminium i'm not expecting them to be as easy as the exhaust. They are quite scuffed So I figured I'm gunna have to be gentle with some fine wet n dry to bring the scratches out as best as I can. It also appears they've got some sort of lacquer on them. So does that mean I'll have to rub that all off, then after I've got all the scratches out and polished them I'll have to re lacquer them?

As for the illumination, They didn't work before they were removed, so I figured the inverter or the el strip was ****ed, But I'd want them to glow red anyway. So am I right in thinking I could just get a similar style of El strip I used on the rear center panel, and then hide the inverter somewhere and wire them into the door switch?

I'm not too worried about the wiring just yet, I've got to get them looking smooth and shiny first.

Anyway here's some pictures.

That is a great find, mine are scuffed but not as bad as that, I intend having a go at improving mine over the winter and expect wet and dry is the way to go initially, if I dont improve them to my satisfaction I may give them a brushed finish, we'll see.

You need EL sheet under both and these can both be run from one invertor and yes pick up at your door switch or the relay itself :cool3:.

They do look a little rough mate. But, they look like the altia ones. Are they metal or just painted up.

As for the EL strip. Phutumpsh may well have some, if not there's a few EL strip suppliers on line and I have some inverts lying around somewhere.

Easy to wire up as well mate

I thought I'd need two inverters, so that's good news. I've polished aluminium before, but my find was that it didn't stay shiny for very long. So I figured that's why they're lacquered. How would I give them a brushed finish?

Yeah my center panel wasn't too bad to do, the splitting of the panel was the hard part. I've got in my head that I'd be able to rig the LED's I have in the footwell up so that they come on with the door too, aswell as off a switch. And I had an idea of fitting a strip along the bottom of the door card so that when the doors open it glows up a little of the floor underneath. but that may just be a pipe dream yet.

As far as I'm aware they are metal. I was a little dubious too because they're so dull, where as yours are ****ing gleaming.

You can fit two invertors if you like of course, this may keep them as bright as possible, some bench observation is in order here.

If you run in a straight line with some sand paper not sure which grade atm, it'll scratch them up a bit, may work well, may not !!

Good call on the brightness. If using 1 inverter per sill would make them brighter, I think I'll change it.

Andy, would it definitely make them brighter

if i was joking i'd say drop them off after you polished them up! got the feeling i've dropped a clanger with them

Cos you light things up more often than me lol

I wouldn't go back into them and fit one either side as the difference will be unnoticeable and you'll be disappointed but if you were doing the job from scratch I would say use two, especially when they're only a few pounds each.

Yeah good call mate. I would like them brighter tho. Maybe some smd's or something lol.

I think you half jest but not sure the depth is there for a smd strip bud, it'll be sitting so near if not touching that the light will not light up the 300ZX at all, you'll just see each spot of light, this is why strips cannot be used for lighting up the reverse light panel.

My altia's are not bright at all, only in total darkness can they really be seen - I'm not into bright lights like you, I like more subtle :tongue_smilie: .
