since I've had my car the Speedo has been intermittent. I have posted this before but without success :(

I have also trawled through the history/search, but still unsure.

Ok, from research I believe the speed sensor sends it signal to the instrument cluster, magic happens and then the cluster sends the signal to the ECU.

This is where I get confused..... I fitted a turbo timer this year and took the speed sensor signal from the wire at the ECU. My timer displays the speed accurately and constantly. No problems at all (in km only)

So the problem must be in the cluster???

I've resoldered all the joints on the cluster pcb.

I've hooked up a voltometer to the wire behind the cluster (with the cluster disconnected) to check for pulse signal and cannot get any signal at all?

Also noticed the timer gets no signal with the cluster disconnected.

The main reason I want this fixed is my power steering only works for about 2 mins after startup and I think the issues are connected.

Someone help please!!

so do you think it's the actual speedo unit in the cluster?

have you had it apart and checked it for any visual problems?

and in my opinion turbo timers are a bit of a waste of time :).

The Speedo is currently off the car, next to me in fact. I've took the Speedo dial off before and reordered any visible connections. However I may have missed some?

Anything else I can look for?

If you look in the tech faq's section in the header above, there is a thread for the speedo fix, the most common issue are dry joints on the pcb board, after that components on the board.

I tried in vain to repair my old speedo. I never could despite resolding all the joints. I gave up and bought a replacement. Personally, I'd ditch the turbo timer. Waste of time imo if you drive the car correctly. Simplify all the wiring. Try a JDM speedo from somewhere just to see whether it is that.

Have a look on the other side of the board with a jewelers loupe...i found a couple on there that had stopped mine working.

Cheers groover, to be honest I knew that was there. Saw it a while back and forgot about it.

Si, I know your views on the timers from other threads ;) and agree mostly. However, I only work 5 miles from work and the cars not warm till about 3 miles in. So if I'm late (happens more often than it should) and I give it a blast for the last couple of miles, surely 3 min cooling is better than none. Of course gentle last miles are better than anything else. :)

The Speedo problem was there before I fitted the timer and fitting didn't affect it. My point is that if the signal goes. Sensor>cluster>ecu. How come the timer gets the pulse signal but the cluster doesn't? I'll take the cluster to bits now and recheck the pub. Failing that try another gauge. Anyone in Norfolk got a spare I can borrow? :winkywink:

Ahhh ok thanks, I never did the other of the board, will check that now.

Just out of curiosity, the three filled holes around c19 have nothing on the other side. Do they need to be filled to work?

posh name for strong magnifying glass, try maplins

Now googling jewelers loupe, Santa

Ok, well drove home from work speedo is working!!!! Thanks everyone  However, not necessarily fixed as the problem was intermittant. Time will tell.......

Interesting though power steering only seems to work up to third gear (auto) ?

Does this point to anything in particular?

I swapped steering wheels a while back and at the time did not know about aligning it. Can someone post a link or explain what I need to do to check it's correct. Thanks

Looking at the board i can see two possibles already lol the two round solder points to the left above C19 top one looks lifted off the track

Check specifically around the resistor at R10 and the four screw hole points, which receive the signal

Yeah, I resoldered all the joints and (as above ) Speedo worked driving home. Now don't suppose you know about steering alignment sensor?? I've read loads about but can't find step by step how to. I guess I'll figure it out when I look at it or do I have to use consult?

I think consult will only tell you if its on or off, dont quote me though as i use scantech.

Move you steering wheel until the wheels are straight, then check the centre of your steering wheel, you may need to move you wheel a couple of splines. As far as im aware there are no components in the steering column that affects the power steering as the system is hydraulic/mechanical, the only electrical side to it is the signal from the speedo to the pressure switch which changes the sensitivity.

You may still have an issue on your speedo board and as recommended use a magnifier to really get in close to the tracks and solder joints, the difference is vast compared to the eye. What looks fine by eye can really stand out under magnification.

I've read about a steering angle sensor that tells hicas which way the wheels point therefore affecting power steering?

On the steering boss I think there is some kind of ring that has to be correctly lined up with something. I haven't looked yet, I will look tomorrow morning. I hoped someone had pics or a better explanation,

Of course you got a TT lol, mines an N/A  There must be some markings on the inner ring

And use daylight outside to look..you`d be amazed at what you can see compared to artificial light..as groover says r10 area and the black square looking thingy with 3 legs. I had to do both sides of the board..be brave!

Its called a triac lol, its a switching component ( turns stuff on and off)

The Hicas system can be checked on consult.

Also check:

There is a mountain of info in the online manual in the tech section

Aha! hence the tri bit..wondered what it did. Thank you for the enlightenment
