I saw the Greenpeace ship, The Rainbow Warrior, moored up in Cardiff Bay today. Went over to have a look and I have NEVER seen so many huge beards and home made jumpers in one place. It was the funniest thing I've seen in ages !

Dave

P.S. Genuine apologies to anyone offended but nothing you say can stop me laughing out loud everytime I remember it !

Digital camera is knackered Warren. Unfortunate incident in France a few weeks ago involving a very large sand dune, a couple of bottles of wine and man's desire to fly.

LMAO... did this come about after one of Nelson Mainfella's threads about mixing weight, volume, velocity and alcohol?

I tried the same sort of thing once with a BMX, a very high slide and a mound of earth.

Always gonna end in tears;)

Hey Glen !

It actually disproved everything Nelson has ever said because I was one of the lightest people there yet I can confirm beyond all doubt that I went down the fastest. Ended up with my head literally buried in the sand. My glasses are still there somewhere. This was on day 2 of a week long holiday and I had to spend the rest of it, day and night, wearing my prescription subglasses. Even had to drive from Stanstead to Cardiff in the middle of the night with the shades on ! Did I look a twat or what !

OK, it was like this ...

A sand dune about 200' tall going up at about 60 degrees. A few of us walked up to the top of it after a barbeque involving slightly more wine than meat. It was pitch black and an amazing view of the stars (the alcohol had vastly increased my appreciation of astronomy). We then looked back and decided that as sand was so soft we should run to the edge and leap and see how far down we'd land. It would be easy. Not dangerous at all. Hic.

It seemed like a good idea at the time and I thought I would just hold my camera above my head to avoid it getting sandy.

I jumped as far as I could and it was brilliant for about a second. Upon landing though, I was reminded that soft sand acts as an incredibly effective brake (even better than a Brembo Skyline setup). Unfortunately Newton's theories were proved to be correct and applying the brakes to just the lower body does not do much for the momentum built up within the upper body. The result was an impressive toppling motion.

What I did quickly find though was that sand's braking effects work equally well on the cranium as they do on the feet.

This was the point at which I discovered the combined effect of gravity and a 60 degree slope. My head stopped moving once it was at about 1 foot below sand level but my feet recommenced downwards motion and went flying over my head.

You'll be getting the drift now and I continued down, alternating between head and feet in the sand, for around 150'. About halfway I remembered the camera in my hand and and so held my hand as high as possible above my head. My continued downward motion meant that this resulted in my driving the camera, at arms length, into the dune.

At the bottom I met a crowd who seemed to have missed my terribly serious near death experience and had apparently been watching something very funny.

A lesson learned.

(pauses only to wipe tears from eyes)

You're not related to Gerard Hoffnung by any chance?

In hindsight, it does share some of the inevitability of the outcome ! Shame I didn't realise beforehand. Although a funny memory now, it cost me a digital camera, a mobile phone, a pair of glasses, a sore neck and the sometimes significant pain associated with sand in every orifice.

ROFLMFAO :D

Hairy you inspire me mate! :D :D :D

Bwhahahaha that is to funny. :D

Only a hairy Welshman could do that lol

If any of the GreenPeace brigade saw you doing your acrobatics in France they probably thought you were French Special Forces in training to blow up their boat again!:D
