I brought a 300zx tt yesterday but on the way home it overheated and the oil pressure was low and had no power. When it got hot it was making a rattling sound but now its cooled it starts and sounds ok, just running lumpy. I have checked the oil and that looks ok but the coolant is very low. Do you think this sounds like head gasket failure?

You might want to look at my thread 'cylinder down'. Would be worth getting it checked out ASAP mate. Might be worth getting a garage with a block tester to do a quick check. You might just have a water leak or something

I'll have a look. I don't always trust block tests, I had an impreza that came back clear but in the end after taking it apart it was the headgasket .

ill put money on it if he losing water it hasn't had a water bypass one of the hoses have gone under the plenum also pull your plugs see if there ok look at the injector plugs are on and clean and working

Right I had it running for a bit today, it struggled to start at first and was a bit lumpy but then got a bit better and the oil pressure was ok. I topped the coolant up and when it started to get warm I could here hissing and then saw water pi**ing out everywhere, looked like near water pump. I just hope that when it got so hot that it hasn't caused any other issues.

There are two short hoses that connect the block to the hardpipes at the front of the engine that feed the radiator. You can see below where they would go just above the water pump. If it's not one of them it could be the seal around the waterpump or thermostat I guess.

 

I'd compression test it and check to see if the plugs are wet.

 

Its hard to see where it is leaking there is orange water stains everywhere

Looking closer at these it looks like they have sealant where they join the metal pipes so I think someone has tried to sort this in the past. I'm going to get them off clean it all, replace them and try again.

The sealant is normal, there isn't a gasket there that I know of. Check the condition of the metal pipes as well and replace if needed while it's all apart as these can fail. MJP in the trader section can sort you new metal pipes and rubber hoses. SFS can do you silicon hoses which i've just put on mine and if you're skint i've got a couple of spare metal pipes in reasonable condition

I had that on mine, needed some torx bits hammered into them.

 

As for any other issues, it's the same as with any recently-purchased vehicle, irrespective of make: Compression test & diagnostic check to ensure all sensors are within range & operating correctly. Then basic service items if there's nothing else that needs looking at.

Just make sure you get a decent set (good manufacturer) as cheap ones will just split.

Thanks, I have managed to get one off but the other is completely round, I was looking at those sockets but just need to make sure I get a set with the right size, looks like I need a 13mm going by the one I have got off.

Going to give you a hint which iff they ever need taking off again will be invaluable...When you fit new hoses make sure the 2 hose clamp ends are positioned at the top and can be reached with long nosed plyers..the 2 clamps at the block end can be fitted any way but the outside 2 must be as above to avoid many hours consuming large amounts of Prozac.

Its leaking from the thermostat housing. I thought I was the water pump to start but after a closer look can see its from above the water pump.
