Another job this winter will be to overhaul all four calipers.

These have been painted in the past with hammerite, what is the best way to remove all this paint? Should they be soaked in something? Or is this a waste of time and just go about removing the paint with some sort of orbital sanding tool??

Secondly, where is the best place to get my new seals from in terms of quality and cost?

Thanks, Dan

115mm angle grinder with wire brush fitting works great

BigRed sell kits on ebay. I wasn't delighted with the quality of some of the parts (rubber seals were OK but an original wire clip was replaced with a plastic one so just used original wire bits) and they said they would look to upgrade them in future, not sure if they have or not.

yes if you are going to clean caliper with the grinder with wire brush do it before you take the pistons out saves all the dirt going in to them. the hard part is getting the pistons out some use a air line compresses i didnt have on so i removed the boots seals then use 2 flat head screw drivers in the grove of the piston to get it out very frustrating when the piston is a bit stuck 2 pistons with seized so i use mold grips on the edge of the pistons to pull and twist em out i replaced the one that were stuck with new pistons. put a but of grease on the seal inside the caliper were the pistons are when you fit the new seal like rub the seal in grease only a tiny amount tho the piston when you refit it should slide in easy and smooth if its hard to push down there is prob with the piston bin it and buy i new one i had to do this the new one slid rite in so the piston was a bit out of shape its not hard just take a bit of time . so first remove the metal clip round the rubber boot then remove the rubber boot remove the piston when remove the inner rubber seal then just replace the inner seal side the piston back in fit the rubber boot and then put the clip round the rubber boot that hold it in place one you have done one piston you will have no prob ding the rest. as i said geting the pistons out is teh hardest part when you have not compresser but i did it so it can be done

If you have access to compressed air then just put a block of wood in the caliper so the pistons dont clatter off each other when you give it a blast of air.

When painting them I found it easier to not be to fussy about getting paint on the nissan bit and just give it a quick file afterwards

Thanks, what about paint? I want a nice finish so would like to spray and lacquer them, they were fine with the brushed on hammerite but will the heat damage regular paint? What do I need to be coating them with?

thanks

No I didn't bother lacquering them mate, been on the car a year now and still look good...admittedly not seen much action on the road over the past year though
