speedometer issues

hey ho ive swapped my jdm speedo which has been calibrated to mph has the lil black box, now the speed shows 30mph more then what im doing, for instance when im shifting from 1st to 2nd the speed is 40. i pulled out my trusty tom tom and when im actaully doing 30mph on the tomtom my speedometer is showing 60 mph....

shouldn't it have been a straight swap or is there something else i need to.......

an the fuel light is constantly on, even with half a tank of fuel.

Looks like the triac has been removed, you will probably need to de solder the tag and re solder into the uk speedo. Assuming the uk clock doesnt need the triac TR2, it should cure the problem, but why it has been messed with, who knows.

If you get no joy, i will take out my UK clocks tomorrow and do some comparisons as i also have a spare JDM set.

i can solder the tag no prob just need to get a soldering iron and for the triac what is its purpose? once the tag is in place will it fix both the 19mph at idel and the 30mph extra reading?

thanks groover

The triac is a switching component, what its job is on the board im not sure, although it may be to allow the signal through once it receives voltage, ie vehicle moving and therefore makes sense that if you are getting a signal stationary the triac missing may be a part of the issue.

Before you go moving the triac from one board to the other, let me take out my clocks tomorrow, i will take some pics and get a clearer understanding of what yours should look like on the board.

will that work? when the car is off it drops to zero, just seems like it would do the same thing , cant hurt to try!! so when swopping the speedo is there like a common tweak that needs to be done? or no

Does it drop to zero though, my guess is it's dropping to the needle rest as it cannot go further round, you need to get it to sit at zero, imagining the needle rest isn't there .

so surely if the needle hadn't dropped enough would the speedo not show fast enough? not the other way as with his... too fast!!

Yes I was aware of that as I typed, I just wanted to point out the correct positioning of the needle on the spindle as once we are sure this is correct we can eliminate this as a factor for showing a false reading either more or less than the GPS .

alright so i started the car took the needle out (without the use of a spoon or spork :)) and popped it back in and it basically went back to where it shouldn't be. tried different variations as in took it out switched engine off and back on, car started needle out and in drove around the block and still no joy it just makes its way back up to 19mph and im sure the fuel gauge is reading incorrectly

i'm sure the fuel gauge is reading incorrectly

You need to take the needle off and put it to where you think it should be, this needle is just trial and error as all the others return to zero when you switch off apart from this one :thumbup1:.

right, so you think, turn needle to about 19, hold the shaft with some pointy nose pliers, take needle off and put back on pointing to Zero.. is that right?

what about when he's doing 60 and its out by 30? or do you think that might help to stop that?

just return them clocks to the seller and get a new ones or if you want to wait i can fix them after my holliday mid august :)

I was talking about the fuel gauge which is why I quoted .

Sorry for the delay, needed a window that i didnt need to drive the car lol.

First pic shows the screw in the 10k hole on the rear of dash, which enters the 5k hole on the speedo. You will need to solder the tag to accommodate the screw.

You will also notice that you need the triac at TR3

Also on the UK clocks there is only one trim pot a 20k potentiometer.

If you have anything different, then its not a UK dpeedo or it has been tampered with IMO
