I know we have some computer enthusiasts in the club so thought I'd post up some details of my new rig that i'm building.

 

First off this is not being built for gaming but rather home multimedia and also a virtual server platform.

 

Arrived last week we start off with the motherboard which is a Supermicro X9DAX-7TF :

Then the hearts of the beast are two xeon six core 2ghz cpu's

I'm planning to order 32GB 1600mhz ECC memory shortly but heres a pic of the case its all going in :

The board has 8 sata ports for hard drives but what makes this board special to me is that it also has 8 SAS drive connections

so I can run high speed 15k drives in it like these which are 600gb 15k SAS drives :

I thought about going with an SSD but unless you buy the bloody expensive ones the sas drives are just as good,

 

Also the drives will be setup in raid which can cause issues with less expensive ssd drives that don't support trim.

 

You would only need one to house the OS, would speed boot time and also access time for running programs.

Whats makes you think maplins,

 

Various places but the board and case were imported directly from the manufacturer for me

seen something like that for sale in maplins.
