Booked a few days away in Cornwall in a couple of weeks. Thought I'd try some of those websites like Expedia etc. for the hotel I found they all came up with a similar price - £160 a night. (Aren't British hotels expensive!!) I wanted to check something so I phoned the hotel direct and finished up booking with them for only £130 a night. No haggling or anything!! Just shows, sometimes, these cheap websites can finish up costing you money!!

I'm goin to cornwall on Thursday for a week. The hotels are expensive, especially in the more touristy places like st Ives & Falmouth. We could've gone abroad with what we've spent on hotels but thought we'd stay in this country for a change.

I rarely use 'sites like Expedia or late rooms - unless it's for work - as they generally only seem to have "corporate" type or "chain" hotels on their books.

If I'm looking for a holiday hotel, I tend to look on the AA's or Johansens' websites and chose individual, privately owned high quality hotels... Still not cheap, but I like places with character or history; oh and an award winning restaurant!!

Have a great time in Cornwall Mandy - I love it down there and visit at least twice a year. My next trip is not until September though....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'm going to Looe in August 14 nights. I have to book a wheelchair accessible caravan or Accommodation which costs a fortune.....lol, but I love it down there, so needs must.

We just got back from a few days down there. If you're heading near Helston, don't miss possibly oldest pub brewery in England - The Blue Anchor - has a great B&B next door (very handy) http://www.spingoales.com

And just on the coast outside St Austell, there's a small harbour-side place called Charlestown. We stayed at http://www.rashleigharms.co.uk/ which has great rooms but the pub is a little chain-y (beer's fine). If we go again, might try this next door http://www.t-gallants.co.uk/guesthouse.htm

Penzance has some nice B&Bs by the harbour and if you like pretending you're Poirot http://www.theyachtinnpenzance.co.uk/

I don't used Expedia or that sort of chain search - because you end up in the same branded clone hotels (had enough of that in my corporate life). In the old days, used to get my accommodation from The Good Beer Guide and these days, stick your destination in Google Maps then search nearby for pub (or inn) accommodation.

You will find Gio's Law usually applies. Places that bother to look after their beer will look after their guests and places that can't be bothered to serve a decent pint can't be relied on for decent food / rooms /welcome.

Cheers - and watch out for the grockles :)
