Asked this previously but didn't get a definitive response....now I've learned to post pics in a thread to show what I'm on about, I'll throw it out there again.....

Dropped the lower dash trim under the steering wheel the other week and found 2 things dangling behind it that clearly shouldn't be dangling there! One is a black box with a number 12 on it, the other is a white springy/contact sort of connection; both shown in pics below......

Cheers for lookin

Steve J

Thanks Mark. The release works, so it may have been swapped at some stage. The ignition key and door key don't match, but the ignition key fits the boot and passenger door, so I initially presumed the drivers lock had been swapped. I tried googling that part number Tom, but was none the wiser what a neon control pole was, if that was it....

that white box is the Release key mech from the steering collum

Just to clarify m8, is this related to the button to release the ignition key or something to do with the steering lock? Haven't ever tested to see if steering lock works tbh...

Could be the valet key. Will open all locks but not start the car or open the glovebox, so that when its left to be cleaned they can access but niot drive it.

it locked the button/key in place when the ignition is on .... button just below the key ...

with it removed you can take your key out if you have a turbo timer install

other wise you can not get the key out ( ignition on ) for the duration of the timer

I thought that at first m8, but it driver door key will only open drivers door, nothing else. The 'ignition' key is red. This won't open drivers door but will open passenger door, and bobs work ignition. It won't do the glovebox though, as wont the driver door key....

No.12 black box....Jeff removed the same from my SWB a couple of weeks ago when converting to Manual. He informed me that Jap cars had parking sensors on the front bumper and a small ariel used to protrude from the front bumper when a small switch behind the gear leaver/Mirror switch was pressed.

I assume you have the same button inside the car and are wondering what that was for (unless that's been swapped out)....will post a pic of the switch later, but my bumper has been swapped it seems...

Yeah nice one. Like ABS, airbags n stuff......that'd certainly make a ride interesting..... Tbh if it's the front parking aeriel like Tubz sed, it hasn't worked since I've had it, so unplugging it wouldn't tell me much.......but thanks for ur idea anyway!

looks like a motion detection device for the alarm ?

Ur right Wes, it does. That's what I thought it prob was when I found it, but its Nissan branded and the car doesn't have a factory alarm, it has a GT Thatcham one......unless its had a factory and been bypassed/disabled......

abs air bags and stuff would all have a tell on the dash in the form of alittle light... plus I was kinda coming from the point that if nothing changes you were not using it and did not need it and would be wasting moments of your life finding out. But good luck..

Yeah, in principle that's right. What I was alluding to was (in my opinion) that it is not always good practise to do this. I removed the door once off a 5 Series BMW and had to disconnect several multi-plugged devices on the door card (with no keys in ignition) Some of these were airbags, and after connecting back, was left with an airbag light. the battery was still connected though and the ECU was flagging up that the airbags had been unplugged and could only be reset by BMW (or somebody with BMW OBd2 type software/connectors). The advice I received following this was to disconnect the battery prior to any such task in the future, to defeat the ECU..... I know the control box in this thread is not airbag related, as the car doesn't even have them; but using the "once bitten, twice shy" approach, wanted to know what it was before unplugging/removing (if its surplus to requirements).
