Paintwork covered in micro blisters...........

I have just noticed the bonnet, tops of wings, boot lid, boot spoiler, and roof are covered in small micro blisters under the lacquer / topcoat........

I have big blisters on boot spoiler and middle of the bonnet with lacquer flaking off.......

Can't afford a respray now......

I have been told it may have been due to the breathable cover that has covered the car over this winter, trapping the moisture under the cover?

I have also been told it may have been moisture ingress when painted, a reaction between primer, colour coat and top coat???

Strangely it seems okay on the sides of the car, only top panels.....

Boot spoiler showing yellow primer through spots..... wondering if there was moisture in between primer and colour coat??

I am guessing, but don't want to have same problem again if I do win the lottery and manage to get this sorted out.....

Looks like I need to learn how to use my compressor and spray gun quickly......

This was all i needed, all money tied up in getting her roadworthy.....

Will be from a bad paint job, hardened 2k is not really affected by moisture or anything really aside from strong chemicals.

Any pics? Sounds like solvent pop though.

Just in the throws of sorting some spraying equipment out myself, got a small compressor and a LVLP gun. Done some spraying before, it's the prepping that's the hard bit.

Where did you paint it; if it is only on the top of the panels, sounds too me like dust or dry/overspray has settled on top of the panels. Did flat the the primer and base coat before coating with lacquer and did you 'tack' cloth the panels before spraying?

Hi Osty1, I didn't paint it... and it was done about 10 years ago by a guy who mainly does classic car work. He's top notch and was the first bodykit he did and the last.....lol

He had it back 4 times to re do as he wasn't happy with finish..... bit of a perfectionist.....lol

He's on holiday at the moment.....

it looks like heat rash on your skin, rear spoiler and bonnet have literally millions of pin prick size bubbles like a rash all over them. where the top coat has blistered there are spots that I can see yellow primer through, like blisters have come from primer, through colour coat and made top coat bubbly..... getting pic to show you.....

You havnt had a car cover on have you? That's happened to me before

Yep..... Got rid of it after the snow after it blew off the car for the umpteenth time........

It was suggested as a cause, but used it every winter for 6 years and this hasn't happened before...?

I guess I will have to do that spraying course I wanted to do..... I have compressor, lines, guns. But was told I need something to remove moisture from air lines if I am spraying?

I have a litre of colour and a litre of thinners..... Just need somewhere to paint.... I can remove the tailgate, bonnet, spoilers.....

I need a respirator, strainers for loading gun and some clear coat that works with the paint I have.... I think it is De Beer paint..... sorry thinking as i type again....lol

Happened on a Triumph GT6 owned by a lady in the Triumph Sports Six Club, it had not long had a respray, and she put a car cover on, looked exactly the same as yours.

Let this be a warning to everyone.......Car covers are bad for your paintwork...... Silly me for thinking it would protect it.........

Anyone want to teach me how to spray properly?...... I need to learn how to use a spray gun and compressor properly.......

I have fallen in love with a new colour a friend of mine in the states has on his 350z...... Nissan Brickyard red....just posted picture on another thread......lol

I have got this on my wing tops and my spoiler after covering my 300 for the last 2 years. My 300 was painted over 5-6 years ago. The paint finish cost £2000 and was shocking  , but has lasted well, surprisingly..... I am thinking the same about the cover....... hhhmmmmmm not sure, but I know I will not cover my 300 again.

Ahh I can see what the problem is now. Single pack cellulose or 2 Pack paint can react like this depending on when and how the paint was applied and under what conditions. Have a look at this; copy it in to your address bar: http://www.hmgpaint.com/knowledge-base/blistering-the-causes-and-prevention

My father in law has a lotus europa, had it for 20+ years. He hasn't driven it for a few years and has other projects on the go, and so parked it up under his covered carport and put a breathable cover over it. Last year he asked me to have a look at the paint work and it suffered the same fate. I grow up spraying and panel beating because my dad had his own body repair garage, unfortunatley a full respray is the only cure, in an oven at the correct temperature and extraction.

If you do decide to have a go yourself I would recommend a top feed gun, high volume compressor at 115psi + constant flow with built in water extractors and in line water filters. Bad luck buddy, hope you get something sorted.

Tony my friend..... you have some work to do on my 300

Only kidding buddy, just need the rear quarter sorting out......

'Thread Hijack' No worries matey. Dropping the Front and rear suspension tomorrow then: Windows out, engine gearbox out and then OUT COMES THE ANGLE GRINDER AND SAW. lol. and yes I will cut out the rear seal for ya mate, and weld it in place and paint it for ya bud; never know I might do your spoiler as well.

Thanks for the advice and finding that info Osty1, much appreciated..... I have a top feed gun and a 8 bar / 116psi compressor, but no water extractors.... so need to get an inline water filter....

I may try and talk my sprayer into letting me have a go or teaching me how to do it properly........lol
