Further to an earlier post re my aircon not working.

 

Is the assembly on the end of the compressor next to the pulley called the clutch?

 

If so should it turn when the aircon is switched on? Obviously the belt is driving the pulley but the end assembly is not turning.

 

Help!

I see from the site they may still do R12, this is the stuff you need to fill up your aircon with. R12 I believe dealers can't get anymore so all they have left is what is in stock. After that it's sauna time in the summer.

 

I think the CFC free stuff does not work as well as R12 and I heard that Nissan did a bulletin about a modification required to the air-con to make best use of it. You may wanna research this as I haven't.

If you need a aircon-recharge do it now !

I think R12 refills are no longer allowed next year

 

And the conversion to a R134-system is a expensive one for the Z32.

_apparently_ the clutch on the aircon pump wont engage if the system is low on gas.

Well I hope so coz mine won't engage and I'm outta gas.

R12 is hard to come by due to some poncy EEC legislation about it smelling and ruining the atmosphere (similar to the French ).

I'm off to a place in Nottingham to get it charged with a replacement for r12 (r49 I think) for £50. I hope it gives me lots of cool and that is why my aircon pump is not engaging....otherwise its brown-trousers time in the Barclays overdraft dept.

As for converting to R-134, it's not that expensive if you've got the automatic AC.

The only thing you have to do is to add ester oil and recharge.

 

I bought the R-134 conversion kit from US (~150$) and

it contained the pressure switch, pressure relieve valve and 2 long

aluminum pipes.

The aluminum pipes replaced the ones comming from the evaporator under the dash.

The things that changed on them were:

-different fittings for filling the system

-no spyglas

This was totally unnecessary to change. I didn't know that those pipes

were included in the kit and had to pay $$$ for the shipping, as the

package was huge.

 

As for the pressure switch, it's not necessary to change it (talked to an AC-repair guy).

The pressure relive valve is not necessary to change as the pressure difference is not big.

 

Since the R-134 is thinner than R-12, you can expect it to escape easier.

I replaced my worn out compressor shaft seal to prevent this from happening.

 

For the manual AC, you have to replace the expansion valve on the evaporator.

This makes it more expensive.

likely as it's making a whining noise

The replacement for R12 is RS-24. This requires no modification to the system. Just had mine done on saturday for £68 including a test of the system. If anybody lives in the northwest of england I can give you the details - the guys in Heywood near manchester.
