I posted at the start of this month i had bought a SWB N/a with a naff engine and was planning on doing a TT swap among other things and general tinkery stuffs.... ( BTW i bought this with a Big end Bearing gone.....)

Well i started to strip her down and upon removing the R/h Wing i found this abomination!

IMG_0635-1.jpg

Then obviously having to remove the engine and planning on stripping the underside i start removing the engine beginning with the Fluids and find a certain something peeping out the sump! (the dipstick i knew about when buying the car and the look on the owners face when i asked him where the rest of it was was priceless)

This next one isnt detrimental but i thought, at least I've gained something so far from buying this.....

Now for my favorite surprise ive had yet...

Wow :)

Great job, and actually covers a few issues I currently have on my new Z.

The jacking points are pretty corroded and completely folded over by previous owners/garages/whoever, and the chassis rails are pretty crumpled too from various lifts in the past I guess..

When I swapped over to my new wheels 2 weeks ago I had to jack on the chassis rails, but used a length of wood to spread the load, but they still seemed to bend in further..

Now I was in the MeisterR group buy too and I can't wait to fit them now they have arrived! But I daren't lift up the car as its just so weak :(

Can you tell me how you went about repairing your original jacking points?

It looks like its a sandwich of the wing the under side with a strengthening piece inbetween?

Cheers

Alex

If your talking about the sill where the bottom of the wings meet I don't use them as a jacking point as they are too weak for the full weight of the car. I usually jack up using a trolly jack and some wood on the subframes then use padded axle stands on the recognised jacking points. To repair them I used some bull nose pliers to pull then straight then used a drift to pull apart the sheets of metal, to remove any rust. Gave it some rust inhibitor. Then persuade them back to shape until I'm happy.

Hope that helped some if any.

Just reading back through your posts you mention about "the seam where most people seem to jack from"

I guess this is what i'm referring to, though whilst I am in complete agreement that it doesn't seem anywhere near strong enough to lift the weight of the car (especially in its corroded state), I presumed this seam was the dedicated jacking point as it has the little notches to show where the thicker and stronger point is for you to jack is..

I cant see any other "dedicated" points to lift from?

But ok, thanks, I'll have a crack at pulling it apart, cleaning it up and putting it back together again similar to your instruction.

Thanks for your help,

Alex

A lot of people have jacked the car at the seam where the wing meets the body. This is the area to avoid as it's too weak to support the car. The proper jacking point is under the doors about a third along (roughly), if you look you will see that there is a little notch cut out and the scissor jack fits in there. I would only use the oem jack on this point and only high enough to remove a tyre/get a bigger jack on the front crossbeam or either main beams.

HTH

Well I didn't know that! I'll check it out tomorrow.

Thanks very much for both your help, sorry for my lack of knowledge and therefore nooby questions!

One more thing learned! Woohoo!

Cheers

Alex

Having followed your thread Dougal you could say you had an influence on me taking this on.

When you giving another update as your build thread is a good read

Thanks.

thanks mate,

ive actually been really busy on the build recently, just not updated. im currently in Hong Kong but I get back on Sunday so updates will follow.

I have to say im quite jealous of the state of the underside of your car, mine had much worse rust, so glad its all done now

This Birds nest of wire is the alarm i removed it was a clifford 650... It never locked the car, set the alarm off whichever button you pressed, and also tested your patience when trying to remove the immobilizer...so i thought id rip it out and it was an atrocity under the dash!

yeap there they all are

The only ones i really think twice about burning out are the subframe bushes....as you have to cut some of the shell out, but not all of it. obviously ive already melted mine to a crisp so only way is forward haha.

I have fitted every bush other than the Arbs, subframe and diff bushes....nothing i couldnt do without a vice grease and a well placed chisel.

looking good mate.

I was just refitting my loom tonight and was wondering if I should remove the alarm or not, still undecided but the wiring isn't much better

loving the work and keep up the good work

  • Author

Hey Dougal or anyone else on that, before I dive into the footwells, does anyone have an easy way to

Remove the main harness? The one that runs along the wings and under the slam panel?

Thanks guys

Edit: it should probably read- from which side is it easiest to disconnect. And it's the engine harness not the main.

Thanks.

Heh, I haven't updated in a while due to work and being away and honestly being lazy!

Also I seem to take less and less photos.

A little snap of my rear subframe as of today, can't see much unfortunately, and yes the caliper is mucky, I haven't got round to cleaning them up yet but needed to take a measurement whilst fitted for the brake lines.

That isn't all though, there is lots going on behind the scenes it's just a surprise so you'll have to wait, if you can be bothered... Haha

Looking fantastic mate and I'm loving the wheels.

Great dedication to this project, well done.
