I posted at the start of this month i had bought a SWB N/a with a naff engine and was planning on doing a TT swap among other things and general tinkery stuffs.... ( BTW i bought this with a Big end Bearing gone.....)

Well i started to strip her down and upon removing the R/h Wing i found this abomination!

IMG_0635-1.jpg

Then obviously having to remove the engine and planning on stripping the underside i start removing the engine beginning with the Fluids and find a certain something peeping out the sump! (the dipstick i knew about when buying the car and the look on the owners face when i asked him where the rest of it was was priceless)

This next one isnt detrimental but i thought, at least I've gained something so far from buying this.....

Now for my favorite surprise ive had yet...

Wow that looks factory fresh m8 well done

  • Author

cheers guys, hopefully it will look a lot better once ive re-seam sealed and then put a nice top coat on. the colour ive chosen is 'squirrel grey' hopefully it doesnt look as dull as it sounds haha

This looks fantastic! So pleased to see one being saved properly!

Are you going to use clear underseal on the freshly painted arches/underside or just leave it as paint?

  • Author

Cheers mate, well it's still going to have another 2-3 coats of rustoleum combi colour on top of the 2 coats of rust bullet. I'd be weary of it chipping though so may apply some underseal to the arches only

Now back to the crap job.

The drivers side sill where most people use a scissor jack on the seam was absolutely mullered, it was practically horizontal in both directions. it wasn't a pretty sight. i don't have a before pic but you can see from this one i bent it back into what it should look like. Also you can of course see my progress with grinding the underside and it gets more and more annoying as it just seams there is much thicker sealant even where there isn't a seam!

whilst cleaning the metal up i removed all the seam sealant so here is a pic or 2 of the new seam sealant. Looks a bit messy maybe but i cleaned it up after, then forgot to take a photo :/

Because the top coat im putting over the rust bullet wont sit very well on top of the sealant i have to reapply rust bullet over this to give it a good surface to bind too. Plus doing it this was not only makes sure rust bullet is on the sealant stopping it from rotting, but its also behind the sealant should it fail to do its job, because even though ive been pulling massive amounts out it defiantly proves more isn't better as there has been some rusty stuff sitting behind it in most cases.

Lol In the last pic you can see the marks from a trolley jack on the chassis rail... Couldn't do much about them.

That is great work..... I need to do this over winter now....... lol

Dedication and loads of hard work.... can't wait to see this on the road......

Mod's........ Can we add this as a sticky for how to restore the underside of your Z....?

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

  • Author

Cheers guys, luckily I'm close to finishing all the underside before winter cause it will really suck doing it in the garage I'm in atm haha.
