Smoking ZX

Well the smoking slowed off which I thought was due to warm weather but then the misfire came back. Checked the plug and it was wet with oil.

Did compression test and these are the results-

5- 165..... 6- 160......

3- 170..... 4- 040......

1- 170..... 2- 165.....

Cylinder 4 (I assume I've written them out right) is extremely low so assuming piston ring on that cylinder (that is the one with the oil on the plug)

Yeah it's what I suspected so that will be on the cards for later in the year.

Debating whether to get another engine and build that up or build mine. Assuming it is just piston ring, my engine is good on all other pistons but i suppose driving it on a bad piston ring cant have been doing the engine much good?

with the comp that low u be looking at melted piston or split rings ..

any of those would give you major bore damage .. to the extent unknown till u pull the motor apart but u be looking at

Rebore and next size pistons up .. or even starting with a new block damage depending

I certainly wouldn't keep driving it, any bits of metal getting in and floating around the oil system is bad news. Might be worth dropping a few drops of I think its diesel down the bore and retesting this should seal the ring temporarily, and give you a false positive. This can then confirm its the ring rather than the valves. You will get a miss with the plug getting oil fouled, however if you have melted the piston or killed the ring there must have been a causative at the beginning. It seems unusual to have cylinder 4 fail, its more typical for it to be the rear two, wouldn't be surprised if there was a second fault in that cylinder.

Engine rebuild or replacement im afraid bud.

I tried it with oil and it went up to 100psi so definately piston related

I think I'll be going down the route of building up a replacement, hopefully I can find a known good one at some point.

It would be rude not to add bigger turbos at the same time too

Mark, did you say somewhere on another post that you know someone who's selling a good engine?
