OK, so went for a 25 mile round trip today. Halfway there the Zed starts to feel lumpy, when I took my foot off the accelerator, it felt like it was not fuelling. Then after a few hundred metres of this it just dies. Power off, engine off, no power steering etc. Stopped at side of road, well, the middle of a high street actually. Was decelerating at the time and going in a 20mph zone. Turbo timer cuts in, so I wait for 30s, then restart the car. No problems there, drive for another mile and again, it cut out. Repeated 7 more times until I got home.

So, at home, thought I would do some simple diagnostics. Started car, on idle, I can hear nothing unusual. Revving it, again, no odd smoke, its smelt a bit rich, but that is all. Turned AVCR off, no change. Then noticed that at idle it was repeating the sound like it was when driving - like a put put sound. Then it just stopped, even at idle. Left it for an hour, then started it again. No trouble starting, drove around the block and within 500m, it starts again. Coasted into my own driveway.

Something is up and I have no idea what it could be. I cannot hear anything different, until the put put sound starts.

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like ptu , when hot they break down and cause a miss or extreme no start at all, I have a spare you could try if you like

Seems a common problem with the Z32's this PTU. I have found a receipt from 2006 stating that a Series 2 PTU wiring and harness was installed - is it possible that like most things, time and wear can kill a PTU? Definitely worth seeing if it is the PTU, just to eliminate it if it is something else!

Yeah i remember seeing the series two ptu on it, however i also remember the state of teh way its been joined in bear cables etc....not good. If its had a hard life its possible to fail like anything esp if its spent time getting wet liek that one has.

Can but try gaz is offering you the ability to try one sounds liek a good opertunity to me. When i went out in that car it was dying on the overrun, on throttle it was fine. May be working looking at vac leaks and the air idle control aswel as the tps, il be honest with you the chap said it was pretty quick but my stock car feels alot quicker, it didnt feel quite right, certainly not as quick or responsive as a z32 should be.

Yes, will PM Gaz and see if we can eliminate the PTU as being the issue. Its not a perfect Zed, but I bought it so I can a) learn about the Z32 and b) so I can restore it to its former glory. Its getting there slowly...

Will be trying to get to the next DJCC meet....

None of us go to djcc meets anymore, just so you know. Gaz is very knowledgeable and friendly, and also hes practically my neighbour haha, so im sure if you do pop over to his, if im free il pop over to be nosey and say hello.
