I plan to clean my throttle bodies over the next few days, can anyone recommend a decent cleaner please?

Also, when I have cleaned them, I plan to check that the butterflies shut correctly. Am I right in thinking that they should snap shut? or should there be a gap?

My understanding is that they should close off completely, (snap shut) leaving the auxiliary air control system, in conjunction with the ECU to determine the correct tick over.

Would that be correct?

Any branded carb cleaner should do it, try not to let it get passed the butterflies, use a tooth brush to remove stubborn dirt, not sure about the position of the butterflies.

You can take them off to give them a real good clean and also get inside the plenum too, but you'll need new gaskets when it goes back together.

There is a slight gap on the butterflies. The car still needs air at idle.

Cheers 300_zx. I will get some carb cleaner at the weekend. (Halfords?)

As you say Baz, take the bodies off. I like the idea of that.

Thanks Trond, do you know what the butterfly gap should be?

pretty sure there shouldnt be a gap, there is a pipe coming off the turbo pipe that goes to the idle air control valve that lets enough air into the system to regulate idle.

Mmmm, that's what I thought vodkashots. I seem to also recall a small bore in the throttle body in front of the butterfly that may allow air to the idle system. Not 100% sure mind.

Cheers Steams. Very nice link mate. Looks I am going to be busy for the next couple of evenings.

At the moment I have both AAC valves in bits on the kitchen table! Lets hope that I can remember how they go back together. Lol

I think I may have figured out how the bi metal air control valve works also, either that or I have fooked it. Lol

Nah theres no gap on the butterflies I have mine off at the moment. Get the worst of the dirt off then stick them in the dishwasher they'll come up nice :shifty: When they are dry spray some grease into the moving parts and reassemble.

I know the hole you are talking about in front, it just goes to one of the pipes underneath the throttle body and is EGR or carbon canister related, I can't remember exactly but it was nothing to do with idle on mine.

Cheers Eggs!

So as to help me understand, I believe that there is a dead stop for both butterflies? If I was to back these off and totally clean the throttle bodies, how would I then set them? Is it a matter of just slightly lifting the butterflies by way of the dead stop screw?

I know the screw you're talking about I didn't touch it myself, I just chucked them in the dishwasher then held it open and wiped out any remaining residue with a rag with white spirit on.

If you did want to take them off you could count the turns until it comes out I guess or put it back roughly where it was then adjust it while looking for light round the edges?

Cheers Eggs,:thumbup1:

Adjusting them so as to just close out the light makes perfect sense. I think I will give that a go.

JeffTT did a write up on how to set the butterflys, ill see if i can hunt it down.

Cheers Vod's. Appreciate it if you could find it mate!:thumbup1:

Cheers guys,:thumbup1::thumbup1:

I have read through the relevant links with great interest. If I understand them correctly, they will guide me through the setting of the linkage mechanism so as to balance the lift of both butterflies. This will still leave me with my dilemma as to setting the dead stop for each individual butterfly in the closed position. I am contemplating as Eggs suggests, setting them both so as to not see any light past the butterfly vane.

From there I will then balance the lift as per the suggested links.

What do you guys think?

As long as both butterflys fully close, and they open at the same time, thats all you need to do with them.
