Ticking time bomb....

Right, I have a little problem...

Yesterday I removed the cracked plastic cam cover as it was really brittle and quite frankly...beyond fooked'. The problem is that as I was removing the left hand half (drivers side) a piece about the size of a 50p piece fell away and landed on top of the cam belt (see attached pic).

Typically the little fecker' despite my trying to talk him out of it, decided that he was going to jump off (honestly I didn't poke him with a long handled screw driver)!

Now it's down there behind that metal bit of cover hiding behind the crank pulley, knowing full well that I can't get to it.

I really don't want to be stripping the engine down any further than I have to and pulling everything off just to get to a piece of plastic, but at the same time I don't want to have the possibility of a ticking time bomb just waiting for its chance to bugger up/slice the cambelt

Any ideas how to get the fecker out or should I just leave it and see how it go's?

Is there an easy way to get the lower cover off?

or more to the point, what will I have to remove (pulleys etc) in order to get it off?

I really wouldn't leave it may come back to haunt you, try loosening the bottom cover just to see if it can move enough to grab it, if not like mark said aux belts off bottom pulley off then you'll have access

I'll see if I can get a fibre optic camera down there to see if I can spot it and then try to get hold of it with something sticky on the end

Doesnt take that long, and for the cost of a engine rebuild if it slices through the cambelt and bends your valves. id say its worth the extra time and effort. may as well change cambelt, water pump and pulleys while there, depending how long its been since they were done.
